My Thoughts…

A Lifelong Love by Gary Thomas is a marriage book that can change the way you’ve looked at your marriage. His deep insights and scriptural references show couples whether newly married or in for many years what God has truly always intended and wanted for our marriages. There’s no better advice than taking that which God laid out for us by dissecting and applying it. We are challenged to live more intimately together through God’s promises and provisions and I believe this book can help.

In this book, there are three parts which have about 6-8 chapters each. The sections are: The Magnificent Obsession, Growing Together, & The Journey Toward Love. In ending the book, there’s an Epilogue, Appendix: God Hates Domestic Violence, Author Information, and Notes. Each chapter in the book varies a bit on size. Some can be read in about 15 minutes and others half an hour or longer depending. On the chapters that take a little longer, my husband and I have been splitting those up over a few days. The chapters always end with “Building a Life Long Love” and prayer to pray.

The questions and exercises at the end of the chapters give you a practical way to apply what was read to your marriage. The questions and application aren’t always easy. Sometimes we fall into our own ways without taking anyone else into consideration when we should be bringing certain things to light especially with our spouse. No matter what the lifestyle or walk with God, I believe the application and questions apply toward constantly tending as well as building a greater love together through God.

I recommend this book. It’s a wonderful reminder to keep things from becoming stale and mundane in our lives together. It’s certainly a good reminder that anything worth having should constantly be cared for. Let us never take for granted the blessings and ordained plan God has given us in each other. Let us not stop building with each other. Let us apply the truths God has given us! I believe any couple can be encouraged and given hope with this title.
