Understanding what we are feeling inside and the emotions that follow those feelings can sometimes be a difficult thing for children to understand or word. The book In My Heart can help. In a delightful kid-friendly approach it educates and opens the door for discussion in a safe and caring way.
As soon, as my children ages 3 & 6 laid on this book they wanted to look at and have it read to them. The book is a work of art as it features a giant cut out heart on the cover that changes up with the turn of every page. The Hearts are in every color of the rainbow. The vibrantly bold and super colorful illustrations within are very attractive and capture each and every feelings quite well, in my opinion.
The feelings expressed are happiness, braveness, madness, calmness, brokenness, sadness, hopefulness, feeling afraid, silliness, and shyness. I feel that the feeling included are all which children will feel. I think it’s a good book to pick up and talk about. Perhaps your child is having a hard day, why not pick up the book a read through. They may be more open to talking about their feelings with this as a prompt.
I would certainly recommend this picture book to children ages 2-8 years old. I believe we’ll be getting a lot of use out of it when sharing our feelings and perhaps it’ll even be a artistic inspiration to create as well.
