About Tropical Traditions…
“The founders of Tropical Traditions are Brian and Marianita Shilhavy.
Brian W. Shilhavy, BA, MA
Brian earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Bible/Greek from Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, and his Master of Arts degree in linguistics from Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago. He is currently the CEO of Tropical Traditions, Inc.
Marianita Jader Shilhavy, BS, CND (Certified Nutritionist/Dietician in the Philippines) earned her bachelor of science degree in nutrition in Manila. Understanding the nutrition of Filipino foods, Marianita worked for over eight years as a hospital dietician and nutritional counselor in the Philippines.
In 1998 Brian and Marianita returned to the Philippines with their three children and renovated Marianita’s old family farmhouse. By this time the coconut industry was severely depressed due to the negative U.S. campaigns against tropical oils in the 1980s and 1990s. Coconut farmers could no longer support their families on the income generated from harvesting coconuts.”
I never knew all the benefits that coconut had until I read the book “Virgin Coconut Oil: How It Has Changed People’s Lives and How It Can Change Yours” By Brian and Marianita Shilhavy that I was sent by the good people over at Tropical Traditions. For instance did you know that you can use this oil in so many different ways such as in your cooking, a moisturizer for your hair and skin, a healing aid to sunburns and rashes ?…and the list goes on!
I enjoyed reading through the book I was sent and was really interested in reading the area on hypothyroidism since my daughter was diagnosed with this condition when she was born. By and by, this book contains many health benefit uses and testimonials from people whom have used the oil. Also added are over 80 recipes to incorporate coconut products into your day to day cooking.

I’ve been substituting regular vegetable oil for a few weeks now with the Tropical Traditions Gold Label Standard Virgin Coconut Oil that I was given to review. I’m extremely pleased with the results I’ve been getting!
Last night, I substituted the vegetable oil I usually use when popping pop corn with the coconut one and it makes for a very tasty snack that my whole family enjoys. Popcorn, Dark Chocolate, and coconut equal such a delightfully tasty snack! I’d like to personally thank Barbara from Camano Island, WA for sharing this wonderful popcorn recipe on the Tropical Traditions Website and encourage those of you that already use coconut oil, to try it out!
Coconut Snack Popcorn
- 1/3 cup coconut oil
- 1 cup of white or dark chocolate chips

Warm coconut oil and chocolate chips over low heat. Add cinnamon, pour over popcorn and stir. Enjoy!
This recipe makes a wonderful for snacks and would be great to share with friends too in sharing about the many great uses of coconut oil!
