Portland Timbers Game

I had a first this last weekend.  What is it, you ask? Well,I was able to attend my very first  Portland Timbers soccer game with my husband.  It’s the first soccer game that I’ve ever witnessed aside from those seen on  TV. The team is based in Portland, Oregon and competes in Major League Soccer (MLS).

The place where my husband works has a box at the stadium in which they offer their employees free or deeply discounted tickets.  My husband and I aren’t that into sports that much but we really enjoyed the soccer game, even though Portland lost to the Vancouver White Caps ( it was a reserve game). The game was slow to start but really picked up the second half. We were also very grateful that the Grandparents watched the kids while we were at the soccer game. And Melody didn’t mind that mommy and daddy were at a soccer game without her on her birthday since she got to spend the day with her Papa and Grandma.

We couldn’t have asked for a better date day. A fun new shared experience at a major league soccer game, weather was overcast but it wasn’t too hot or cold out. We got to visit a top resturant in Portland for dinner that served exquisite seafood called Jake’s Famous Crawfish which is considered one of the top ten seafood restaurants in the nation. Jake’s Famous Crawfish has been a downtown Portland landmark for more than 110 years! Excellent customer service and a wonderful atmosphere. I would highly recommend checking them out if you are in the Portland area.

Board Game Review: The Castles Of Burgundy by Ravensburger

We’ve  been playing the The Castles Of Burgundy by Ravensburger board game  for a few days now and really have been enjoying it! I asked my husband to write up a review on this title to share here on my blog and on Amazon and he happily agreed. This may just be a board game that you’d like to add to your own collection.

Review below written by guest reviewer: Justin Lowmaster a.k.a My Husband

Castles of Burgundy is a German game by Ravensburger. It has the feel of other similar games, and like most German games while competitive, there is not any attacking other players. This game is fact is free of any war elements of all kinds.

The theme of the game is 15th century Burgundy, where you play as a prince devoting your effort to building your estate via trading and building. While thematic, no knowledge of actual history is needed to play, and I don’t think playing the game will teach you any history, but it will develop planning and decision making skills.

The game board is small, but organized sensibly and isn’t cluttered. The setup is quick if you keep the pieces organized in the box as mostly it just involves just shuffling some tiles. It can be played by all 4 players on a small IKEA 4 place table (A table that barely fit even the main board, never mind the cards, of Arkham Horror.) There is a player board for each player that is also small and well organized. All play happens on the main board and on the player boards, with a supply of tiles to the side. The standard player boards are all the same, but there are 8 other ones that are different, for advanced play. They are sturdy, but you could laminate them if you felt the need, so long as they would still fit in the box when you got done.

To learn the game, I highly recommend just setting up the game and going through a couple turns. Some of the rules make more sense when you can see the board and the different tiles. The game is divided into 5 phases, and each phase contains 5 rounds. Every one of them plays the same. While each round is the same, the choices available are constantly fluctuating, keeping you on your toes. The main point is to move tiles from the game board to the player board, then from the player board convert the tiles to victory points. Some things give you points right away, but a large portion of your points come from the Knowledge tiles you take which give you points at the end game.

The board is also set up to scale from 2 to 4 players without any additional setup, just fill in the spots with a number lass than or equal to the number of players, and leave the other spots empty.

As the game ends at the end of the last phase, thus always at the same time, and the fact that the rounds go very fast, it’s a fast paced game, and can actually easily stopped at the end of a round and is easy to pick up again. Your long term strategies should be fairly obvious at any point of the game, so your not likely to forget what you were doing. This is good when you have two kids under the age of 4 who might at any time wake up or start assaulting their sibling.

Castles of Burgundy is a fantastic game, and will get as much play as possible. It’s fast setup, and fast game play, means there is more of a chance to work it into our frequently interrupted life.

Of course, when the kids are old enough, we’ll be playing it with them.

Game Review: 101-in-1 Explosive Megamix for WiiWare

Guest Review written by Justin Lowmaster (a.k.a The Husband)

I’ll have to be honest as say I was a bit nonplussed when I started playing 101-in-1 Explosive Megamix. The first mini-game involved using the wiimote to grab a basketball in a 2d sideways view and toss it into the hoop. This is on the same system where I can use motion controls to mimic throwing a real basketball into a hoop in 3d. Many of the games have similar controls schemes. It wasn’t until I unlocked a puzzle game that I found one I really liked. There’s a grid of pipes and there’s oil flowing according to certain rules and you have to anticipate which oil derrick it will exit from. I enjoyed that one.

I didn’t have time to unlock all the games for the review, but the unlocking system provides replay value. The first few games are automatically unlocked. The rest you can buy with points you earn. Any points you gain while playing any game go into a point pool, win or lose. This allows you to play a game as much as you want to unlock more games, without having to master each game, if you happen to dislike one. But if you match or surpass the point threshold of any specific game you get bonus points.

There are a variety of games types and I found a few more I enjoyed while unlocking the ones I did. I do wish the games gave you a clue as to game genre before unlocking it, such as Puzzle, or Sports, or Action, etc.

Some of the games are played will using the wiimote, while others are a bit difficult to play with the wiimote. The games themselves are good mini games and would be fun to pass some time in line, or waiting for things, but one tends to not take a Wii on the go with them. I would recommend you get this game on a DS or Android or iOS or other device before you get it for the Wii. I downloaded the game free for my Nexus S and played some of the same games on there, and I preferred it. The advantage of the Wii version (or other paid version) would be the lack of ads. Something to consider.

Overall, I’d rate this game good, just take into account the platforms you can play it on before paying for the game. You can see a video of the game for yourself here and if you are interested in learning more, check out the game site here.
