Exciting Sights: Nancy Knowles Retrospective at the Koth Gallery

The Koth Gallery located at the Longview Public Library had on display during the month of January the beautiful and heartfelt works of Nancy Knowles.

This talented artist grew up in Oregon but spent most of her childhood in Iowa before moving to the beautiful scenery of western Washington as a preteen. Her journey into drawing began in first grade, thanks to her mom, who encouraged her to make her own hand-drawn paper dolls instead of asking for them. From that moment on, she discovered how much fun drawing could be! As she got older, she honed her skills even further by participating in workshops with some amazing artists like Jim Lewis, Byron Pickering, Vernon Nye, Dale Gehrman, Charlotte Abernathy, Joy Campbell, Tom Lynch, and many more.

It’s truly heartwarming to see how much her time in nature has inspired her painting. The way she dedicated herself to observing, sketching, painting, and photographing the breathtaking scenery of the Pacific Northwest, from California to British Columbia, and the Rocky Mountains, from Colorado to Alberta, is nothing short of admirable. Her deep appreciation for these landscapes beautifully comes through in her work.

I found this presentation truly inspiring. Her wide range of skills left a lasting impression. She masterfully captured the beauty of various scenes and seasons. In particular, her portrayal of a nearby beach evoked a cherished memory shared between my children and I.

Nancy passed away on June 28, 2024. The show includes many of her unsold larger works, as well as some smaller ones, drawn from those in her Woodland area home and studio.
