Northwest Weather Woes: Is it Spring or Winter?

It was warm, sunny and it felt like Summer just a few days ago. Imagine my suprise when my family and I woke to a blanket of of snow on this Monday morning. I’ve lived in Oregon for 15 years and 4 months and never have I ever seen snow fall in April.

According to the news, it’s the first measurable snow in April recorded at the Portland International Airport since records began in 1940. And it’s the latest the city of Portland has seen winter weather in at least 80 years. That said, it makes me wonder what bizzare weather we’ll see next considering the fires a year or so ago and the drought we’ve been in for some time now.

We did do some gardening last week. We put in a few rows of radishes, a bed full of Walla Walla Sweet Onions, and 7 heads of buttercrunch lettuce (our favorite). I know these crops can be cold hardy but I’m not sure how they are going to react to the sudden warm and shockingly cold temperatures. We’ll see in a couple of weeks if we need to replant.

I believe we have a few more days of really cold nights and chillier days and than the weather should go back to typical Spring highs and lows but stranger things have happened.

How’s the weather where you are?
