Porcupine’s Pie {A Sweet Autumn Themed Children’s Book}

Porcupine’s Pie by Laura Renauld and illustrated by Jennie Poh is a delightful storybook to be enjoyed during the Autumn season.

In this heartfelt tale, we meet Porcupine. Porcupine is getting all ready for “Feast Day” in which she typically bakes her very famous Cranberry Pie. Alas, she has everything she needs except the water to wash the cranberries. She makes her way to the river but not without running into a few of her friends first whom are also making something special to share for their holiday. Her friends all were missing a bit of something in their own dishes and what does Porcupine do but offer them to take as much as they need from her pantry! However, on her journey to the river, a dilemma strikes when all of her cranberries go missing!

My children and myself were on the edge of our seat throughout the entirety story wondering what would happen next. Would the day be ruined? Oh what would this sweet little Porcupine do? Well, all is not lost! The important of being thankful, generous, and kind beam throughout this story. I personally love that though something that wasn’t planned took place that the characters didn’t let it get them down. Goodness, prevailed in a very wonderful way in which a new tradition was started!

The illustrations are lovely. The woodland scene draws one in quite well. I love all the little details and the rich Autumn color scheme the illustrator chose to use.

A recipe for Friendship Pie that the characters created together in the story is included in the back of the book. We haven’t baked this recipes ourselves yet but it sounds delicious and we can’t wait to gather all the ingredients to make it ourselves.

My children generally enjoyed this book. It’s a great read-aloud story. My two and half year old daughter has brought it to me for reading many times. I am delighted to share such a sweet tale with my children. I’ll certainly be bringing it out every Autumn season. It’s a sweet book to keep on the coffee table for those Thanksgiving guest and visitors you may be hosting. Perfect for at home, the library and in the classroom!
