I’m Not A Scaredy Cat by well-known author Max Lucado is a book for every child. In this tale, children will learn to rely upon and speak to God when they are afraid. No matter how big or seemingly small or silly to some the fright could be, children will rest easier knowing God hears and knows. A reassurance from this story about their great God will bring comfort to their mind and heart.
Max presents us with a cute cat character that has a lot of different things and situations that he’s frightened of. There’s the squeaky duck, the marching band, a leaf from a tree suddenly falling upon the cat, a fast slide, the sneeze of an elephant, and so forth.
The book is written in a rhyming way which makes reading it aloud flow really well. There are typically two fears explained that the cat is afraid of followed by what the cat does after being startled. What the cat does is speak to God! This phrase reads “God, you are good. God, you are near. God, you are here! And, God, you love me.” If the book is read, again and again, I am more than certain this phrase will stick with a child and they can say it to God when they are feeling worried, frightened, startled, or scared too.
Shirley Ng-Benitez illustrates this book well. Each of my children made sure I didn’t turn to the next page until they were done exploring every little detail. I applaud the color choices and familiarity in the pictures chosen for the story to pair with the story situations.
This book would make a wonderful gift in helping one be brave in the Lord and to remember to always pray! I highly recommend it.
