Little Jesus, Little Me by author Doris Rikkers and illustrator Lizzie Walkley is a sweet book. Its main purpose is to help children understand that Jesus was a child just like them.  The comparison takes things like learning to walk, loving to read, etc.

In this book, Jesus is depicted as a child. On the right side of the book, there’s an illustration of Jesus and on the left of a child from our current time.  For example, one page says Jesus was a little baby…” and on the left page it reads “..just like me”. The left side pages of the book always end with “…just like me”.  The repetitive nature of this phrase in the book will easily catch on with little ones and they’ll likely say the phrase every time the book is read together aloud.

The children throughout the book have different skin and hair color. I think this was a good choice to teach about how we are different in those areas but we share the single truth of being a child of God. Discussion can happen about the different times and things in the illustrations. I love books with simple details that can lead to much more wonder and learning possibilities like this one.

My 15-month-old daughter likes this book. She points to the illustrations of the children and says “baby”. I feel it’s never too soon to introduce Jesus to a child. I’ll be reading this book to her often.

I feel this title is an ideal pick for toddlers to children around the age of four to five years old.  It’s a good choice for home or church.
