-Author Joanne Fink Interview-
- What drew you to start Bible journaling?
I started lettering God’s word more than three decades ago, when I first learned calligraphy. I would practice different lettering styles by writing my favorite scriptures. I’ve spent most of my career designing products for the stationery, gift and craft industries, and love to incorporate scripture into the products I design. I also love to teach, and have videos on YouTube for people who are interested in learning how to draw and letter. Three years ago I got an e-mail from one of my Australian fans letting me know that she had shared some of my lettering videos in her Bible Journaling Group. I wrote back to thank her, and since I wasn’t familiar with Bible Journaling, asked what it was. She sent me a link to Shanna Noel’s FB group, and I was astonished to discover that there were other people who were lettering God’s word, and doing it IN their Bibles! I’ve written Bible passages in journals and sketchbooks, on paintings, shirts and even on walls, but not in a Bible. I didn’t actually feel comfortable working in the Bible, but felt such a strong connection to this amazing group of people who were looking to grow closer to God by lettering His word, that I joined the FB group to see all the work people posted.
- What are your top 5, favorite art supplies for your Bible art journaling process?
My favorite supply for Bible Journaling— and all of my other work— is a Pigma® Micron® by Sakura. I use it both for drawing and lettering, and create most of the illustrations in my books with the 01 size. Microns come in several colors, but I almost always use the black or the purple. The ink is archival, which means it won’t fade, and I love the smooth way it flows from the pen. I also love Sakura’s Koi® Watercolors and water brushes. For Bible Journaling I prefer the pan watercolors. I’ve designed a line of “Inspired Journaling” stencils for The Crafter’s Workshop, and a new line of Bible Journaling rubber-stamps for Spellbinders, and have been having a lot of fun using them to journal. I often add metallic and glitter highlights with Sakura’s gelly roll metallic and stardust pens.
- Do you have a favorite piece, please describe it and why it’s your favorite.
I don’t really I have a favorite piece, but I am especially fond of this particular card because it features one of my earliest drawings paired with Psalm 96:1, which is one of my favorite scriptures. I’d be happy to send a photo or a copy of the card if you’d like to see it.
- Will we see more books from each of you in the future on Bible Journaling or otherwise.
I have at least 8 titles on my drawing board! My next book, When You Lose Someone You Love, will be published by Fox Chapel Publishing this summer. Basically excerpts from the illustrated grief journals I kept after my husband died in 2011, and is a gift of comfort for anyone who has lost someone they love. I also just submitted a proposal for a book of ‘Bible Margins’, which would have illustrations to color and/or trace into your Bible, as well as hand-lettered versions of some of my favorite scriptures.
