I’d been looking for a reasonably simple footing in attempts to memorize Bible scripture. I feel that it’s important to have God’s words to turn toward at all times and to share with others off the top of my head. But let’s face it, with all the busy these days something so seemingly simple can be a real challenge.Often having a goal and not having a good way to get there can be very discouraging to the point of never starting.
I didn’t want to just memorize scripture starting in the New Year of 2017 and forever on but to also discover what certain verses meant in the Biblical context. I also wanted to discover what they mean to me. Liz Curtis Higgs book “31 Verses to Write on Your Heart” has been the solution to all my wants and needs, offering not just a look at scripture but a study guide and a number of ways to never forget it as well!
Liz is an exceptional writer. She writes in a way that would speak into the heart of a very close dear friend. She introduces a verse, often with a personal story, and then break it down word by word, listing meanings, and applications we can apply to our lives daily. Every verse ends with an application prayer and a tip to memorize it. The verses chosen for this book are encouraging, uplifting, convicting, and a reminder of God’s love and grace.
She encourages the reader to read and study the book in what way works best for them. It could be a chapter/verse a day, week, or so forth. This book could be studied in a group setting or alone during quiet times. It works no matter what way one would go about it.
I discovered I learn best visually so placing scripture in places I’ll see it often or recreating the verse in art leaves a lasting memorable impression in my mind. This book is pairing wonderfully with my journaling Bible! I feel that my walk with the Lord in studying his scriptures through this book are is providing a deeper understanding, fresh look, and incredible new passion that I didn’t have prior to.
I would definitely recommend this book to those of all ages. It would be a wonderful book to pick to start the New Year off well. Get a copy for yourself, for a friend, and tell every sister you know!
