I adore science sets for my kids and the Nancy B’s Science Club: Garbage to Gardens Compost Kit hits the mark! It’s promoted for children ages eight years old and up but I feel that a child as young as five could also benefit. This kit gives children not just a hands-on approach to the beauty of composting but a see it for yourself view when conducting their own experiments.
The 22-page activity book has many experiments to conduct. It’s packed full of places to jot down what’s happening with the experiments done week by week, day by day, etc. There’s a ton of information about how to compost, what will break down and what won’t, the time span of things breaking down, bugs that are beneficial to this process, compost recipes, and so much more!
We have a big compost pile in our yard that we use when we plant our garden. The kids know stuff goes out there for the purpose of becoming rich soil but they never really knew the why, the how, and that what. I adore the fact that with this kit they are learning about life cycles and other environmentally important things!
The kit comes with a clear compost container with 2 compartments includes a removable divider, two 3x magnifiers, 2 write-on/wipe-off boards, and lid with air holes. The book is one use only when it comes to writing down results and things that go on with each activity. But you could either copy pages or write down results elsewhere if intending to use it for more than one child or student. I feel the kit is well thought out and good quality.
My nearly six-year-old son and my 8 1/2 year old daughter really liked this kit. They were excited they could see numerous items break down! My daughter told me many of the facts found through the book and couldn’t believe how long some things take to break down. My family tries to make environmentally conscious choices when it comes to the products we use and throw out in our home but after using this kit we see we can do a lot more!
This kit would be perfect for any child that loves Science, gardening, or both. Parents and teachers will appreciate that nearly everything you need except for the soil and items to break down are included!
