“Mommy, what’s joy? ,” my children ask me. Joy is many things as well as a wonderful emotion. Sometimes, I’ll admit, explaining a particular feeling can be difficult to word. All My Treasures: A book of Joy by Jo Witek gives children a visual into this emotion and it gives parents/caregivers a jumping board to discuss it further.
As soon, as my children age 5 & 8 laid their eyes on this book they wanted to look at and have it read to them. They said, “Hey mom, this looks like that other book we have”. The book they were referring to was another by this author titled “In My Heart” which explained love.
The book is a work of art with wonderous things to look and lift on every page. The color scheme and kid-friendly illustrations within are very attractive and capture each and every feeling quite well, in my opinion.
We follow a little girl and she thinks about what she would fill her treasure box with that brings her joy like rainy days, her sibling, special moments, etc. There are physical things she can place inside but there are things that can’t be captured as well that bring her joy. Seeing all the different things will likely prompt a conversation with a child about what things bring them joy too!
I certainly recommend this picture book to children ages 2-8 years old. I believe we’ll be getting a lot of use out of it when sharing our feelings of joy. It’ll be nice to pick up on those rough days too.
