Holiday Gift Guide: REDWOODVENTURES – IDO3D GO! Drawing Pens! {Review}

If you are looking for an outside of the box, art centered gift for a creative kid this Holiday season, you may want to check out the IDO3D pen sets by RedwoodVentures.  These unique sets are limited only to the imagination of whoever is creating with the pens. Sets come in a variety of options, some even with mechanisms to make creations move around! These are a great option, in my opinion to more expensive models on the market. It’s a great way for a child to expand their artistic abilities!

My kids ages almost 6 and 8 1/2 years old tried these out with their Dad. They told me they really enjoyed creating! My daughter made some pretty cool glasses and my son made a few random creatures and an egg. I asked them if they’d like to continue to have these around to create with on a consistent basis and they said yes! I like they are not only creating neat things but practicing their patience in drawing more slowly and then in also waiting for their creations to set/dry.

Dad’s Thoughts…

These 3D drawing pens are an interesting and fun toy. They are in fact just tubes of the ink with a UV light that you attach. As you draw, the light cures and hardens the ink.

So far we haven’t gotten it to look as smooth and nice looking as in the book. It is fun however.
Trying to draw precisely is a challenge. Using the provided templates to draw is good practice. One of them, however, is a bridge that spans two pages of the book, and part of the design is in the folds of the booklet.
I tried to make a wireframe design but was having trouble getting it to work when drawing up. Perhaps I was going to fast.
The pens are squeeze tubes, so to have a consistent flow you need to squeeze consistently.
There are several surfaces included to draw on. A flat rectangle, and a dome and half-egg shape. You can draw in or on the latter two for various designs.
Curing with the light works, but if you have layers, it may be gooey on the bottom or between layers. There’s not much of a smell, and it’s only a little messy.
I would consider this more of a fun activity than something to make precise designs with.
