Elwood Bigfoot: Wanted: Birdie Friends! is a cute book. Both my 4 year old son and 7 year old daughter have enjoyed having this read to them. I’ve caught them during our weeks picking this book up on their own and gazing at all the colorfully interesting illustrations. The illustrations perfectly capture the feelings of characters! The main character in this story is seeking friendship and his ways in going about it are interesting to witness. This book can open up conversations with a child about making friends . The story mainly is about perseverance and not giving up. I believe at one point or another there’s been a bit of this Bigfoot in all of us.
First of all, know that I love friendship stories, especially inter-species friendship stories. So one night I watched an episode of FINDING BIGFOOT and noticed how most supposed sightings are of “a” bigfoot. That made me wonder if bigfoot creatures ever get lonely. After that, it was a short jump to my wondering who a bigfoot might befriend, out there in the lonely forest.
What books were among your childhood favorites and why?
I went through a period where I wanted to read nothing but horse books, especially those by Marguerite Henry. My 4th grade teacher read to us daily from the Little House on the Prairie series, which prompted me to read those again and again. I was also very fond of Edward Eager’s HALF MAGIC. And, of course, I read every Nancy Drew mystery I could get my hands on.
What are you hoping readers take away from this book?
I’d like readers to simply enjoy getting to know Elwood, feeling for him as he knocks himself out to make friends with the birdies. If they learn anything, I hope it’s that making friends isn’t always an easy thing, but worth the effort.
Do you have any other books in the works?
Coming next spring is TEENY TINY TOADY, the rhyming story of a heroic little toad. Next fall brings IF A T. REX CRASHES YOUR BIRTHDAY PARTY, a funny primer from a boy with experience.
