The Last Unicorn Synopsis: Upon hearing that she may be the very last of her kind on Earth, a Unicorn (Mia Farrow) goes in search of others like her. Her quest won’t be easy, as it leads her straight to the evil King Haggard (Christopher Lee) and his infamous Red Bull! And the journey is made even more complicated when, to protect her from the envious wrath of Haggard, a spell is cast to turn the Unicorn into the Lady Amalthea, a young, beautiful, human woman. But with this new body comes new thoughts and feelings, such as love for Haggard’s son, Prince Lir (Jeff Bridges). Will the Unicorn get lost inside this new body? Will she meet the fate of the other Unicorns? Or will she be able to defeat Haggard and his Red Bull with the aid of her friends, Schmendrick the bumbling magician (Alan Arkin) and Molly Grue (Tammy Grimes).

Based on the worldwide bestselling novel by Hugo-Award winning author Peter S. Beagle, The Last Unicorn boasts an all-star vocal cast, featuring the talents of Academy Award® winner Jeff Bridges (The Big Lebowski), Academy Award® winner Alan Arkin (Little Miss Sunshine), Mia Farrow (The Purple Rose of Cairo), Angela Lansbury (Nanny McPhee) and Rene Auberjonois (The Little Mermaid), as well as unforgettable original music by Jimmy Webb, performed by the band America, and animation by the Japanese artists who later became the core of Hayao Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli (My Neighbor Totoro,Spirited Away).

My Thoughts…

The Last Unicorn: The Enchanted Edition does not disappoint. This movie has been a favorite of mine since I was far younger and I am quite pleased with the fact it was digitally remastered. The restoration makes this film really pop! The colors are quite vivid and the imagery sharp! The spoken word and music sounds even better than I remembered.  The bonus features with commentary I’m glad were included. I believe fans of the movie will be just as happy as me and new fans will be delighted for the first time of this classic fantasy flick being brought back to life.

I would urge parents to screen this movie before hand. It’s on the more serious side and there are some moments that could be  frightening and scary for young children. It’s a story of love, friendship, and regret. If you like the fantasy and mythical genre, chances are you’ll like this movie.    Run-time is 93 minutes long.
