A Kid’s Guide to Keeping Chickens is a must have book for any family planning on raising chickens. This book a plethora of information and answers just about any question one may have about starting, caring, and properly nurturing your backyard chickens. In being recently new to the world of chicken I did a lot of research before bringing chicks home and I hadn’t come across a book as good as this one. When I say I checked out a lot of books, we are talking a lot. The reason I checked out so many was because my aim was not just to raise chickens but to learn as much as we could about them for our homeschool studies.
When this book arrived in the mail, my daughter disappeared with it! She later returned super excited to share with me all that she had learned and wanted to do for our chickens. The book holds major kid-appeal. It’s colorful, the illustrations are engaging, and the full color photos make it a lot of fun to look at. There’ s a lot of information in this book but it’s not overwhelming. The index in the back makes it easy to locate specific topics rather quickly.
I’ve found this book to offer excellent suggestions and ideas. The bonus tear out wall poster that was included my kids love! The poster is super cute and features chicken speak. That’s right, if you listen closely you can tell the difference in what your chickens are trying to say! The poster has spaces in which to customize with the number of chickens you have, what type they are, and so on.
I asked my kids what they liked about this book and they said everything! I’m siding with them on that deceleration. I love the personal stories and the fact that their are conversations with kids about all sorts of topics. There are facts, tips, and so many excellent suggestions. As of right now, my children are eager to try out some of the kid-friendly crafts, recipes for our family (once our flock starts laying), and special treats for our chickens! I’m taking the suggestions mentioned and growing a vegetable and herb garden and working on botanical bug sprays for the flock.
