The Portlandia Cookbook {Review}

The Portlandia Cookbook is a must have for any fan of the popular hit TV show. It’s a wonderful array of everything most celebrated about the city of Portland with amusing twists and humorous turns throughout. I feel that this book truly captures the saying most native Oregonians know about keeping Portland weird. It’s clearly not to be taken seriously so if that’s what one is expecting from this work, they’ll be quite disheartened. It brings the very best of the show from the characters to the unique locations together to deliver some pretty amazing recipes that any skilled level cook can pull off!

The recipes in this book are all pretty mouth watering. There are five categories; Small Plates, Main Courses,Desserts, Drinks, and Brunch which altogether make up over 50 recipes! A few of my favorites are Brussels Sprouts & Bacon, Spicy Garlic Pickles, Tortilla Soup with Chicken, Marion berry Pancakes, & the Mango Lassi Smoothie to name just a few. The layout for each recipe makes it easy to follow from start to finish. Serving sizes, prep time, and total time till finished is given for most of the recipes. There are usually make ahead tips and suggestions too that are helpful. I believe that with this cookbook anyone can cook like a local!

portlandiacookbookpickles-750x482 This book is rich. It really drew me in right away with the amazing photography and the extremely fitting illustrations. Aside from the vast variety of recipes, there are snippets from the characters throughout. I caught myself nudging my husband many times and sharing a line or two from the book. Moments like these from several different scenes and known characters seen while watching Portlandia together left us laughing. It’s been a great book for bonding and I believe it would be a fabulous conversation starter between friend! It’s definitely a book with many purposes aside from even cooking! If you are a local you most certainly won’t want to pass on this cookbook. It’s certainly earned a welcome place in my kitchen as well as on the coffee-table.

The Portlandia Cookbook: Cook Like a Local can be purchased on for in e-book ($11.99) or hardcover ($19.23) format. It’s also available at other bookstores too!
