Merry Christmas Splat… and more winter stories {DVD Review}

splat1Merry Christmas Splat… and more winter stories  is a delightful DVD recently released  into Scholastic Storybook Treasures collection. If you love the Holiday season and are excitingly anticipating snowy days, then you’ll adore the stories on this DVD, I know we have been! It was our first Holiday themed DVD to watch during the month of December!

The stories featured in this collaboration are geared specifically toward children ages two through six years old. My daughter is nearly five and 1/2 and my son will be three years old in about a month and this DVD grasped both their attention quite well. Splat the Cat is also a favorite of my kids. They were pretty excited to see Splat come to life in yet another offering by Scholastics and in a Christmas story at that!

There’s a good mix of stories in this collection. Some stories are full of such whimsy others a little more serious but quite enjoyable. The narration of those such as Sean Astin and even an author of one of the stories is a real treat!  The narrators aren’t dull in the least and really keeps the viewers drawn into the story. The visuals are equally as good and I really liked how in the story Snowflake Bentley they go from storybook to real life visuals. It makes quite an impact on the viewer!

Children and adults alike can learn about the christmas holiday, winter Season, family, determination, and honor. I’ll have to say the story Snowflake Bentley is my favorite and truly makes you look a little closer at world. All the stories support early reading skills with the read along feature.  Also the bonus  behind-the-Scenes look at Creating the Animation for Fletcher and the Snowflake Christmas I found fun and engaging!

The Stories:

MERRY CHRISTMAS, SPLAT (Written and illustrated by Rob Scotton, narrated by John Keating) Splat is trying hard to be good before Santa’s arrival so he can get all the presents he’s dreamed of on Christmas day!

FLETCHER AND THE SNOWFLAKE CHRISTMAS (By Julia Rawlinson, illustrated by Tiphanie Beeke, narrated by Katherine Kellgren) It’s Christmas Eve and Fletcher wonders how Santa will find his burrow through all the snow.

SNOWFLAKE BENTLEY (By Jacqueline Briggs Martin, illustrated by Mary Azarian, narrated by Sean Astin) This is the story of Willie Bentley, who loved and learned all about snowflakes.

OWL MOON (Written and narrated by Jane Yolen, illustrated by John Schoenherr) A girl and her father search the moonlit woods for the Great Horned Owl.

I highly recommend checking out Merry Christmas Splat… and more winter stories whether it be to enjoy at home with your children or in a classroom setting. There is much to be enjoyed and learned from the stories included. I know we’ll be watching it again and looking for books by the authors stories included next time we are at the library!
