Impromptu singalongs and toe tapping have been going on in my household anytime I pop The Sounding Joy by Elizabeth Mitchell & Friends into our CD player. This delightful collection of Christmas songs and folk carols come out of the Ruth Crawford Seeger’s 1953 songbook American Folk Songs for Christmas. What a joy and privilege to listen such heartfelt songs of Christ’s birth and of those sung in celebration during the month of December to celebrate solstice so many years ago.
My children both boy and girl ages 5 and 2 years old have let me know they like this album. I’ve been playing it when the kids are doing seasonal crafts as well as for them when doing puzzles and turning down for the evening. It’s an album that’s a bit upbeat but also mellowing and calming to the soul. Some of the songs have repetitive lyrics and due to that my kids have caught on to the rich lyrics of many wholesome songs. Trust me when I say it’s pretty cute to hear my kids going around singing “Oh, Mary and the Baby, Sweet Lamb” & “Children Go Where I Send Thee” randomly throughout the day.
This album is a great family choice for those both young and old. If you like Folk music, this album is sure to delight! There are a total 24 songs on The Sounding Joy and runtime is approximately 70 minutes. If you like me, enjoy a little background on the creation of albums and songs chosen , you’ll be quite satisfied with the included 32 page booklet with photos that comes with every album.
