Ready, Set, 100th Day! by Nancy Elizabeth Wallace {Children’s Book Review}

In Ready, Set, 100th Day! we meet fun rabbit character named Minna. We open the story to find Minna sitting upon the living room floor amongst her family on a Sunday morning pondering what her project for the 100th day of school will be. As the story continues on, Minna explores counting to 100 in many different ways using many different types of manipulative items often used for math exercises.

This book has a story but it can be used as well for a math & counting resource book! The number groups covered to be learned in this book are 5’s, 10’s, 20’s, 25’s, and 50’s. There are many bright and cheerful illustrations displayed upon the pages that children can count along with to reach one hundred. My daughter age five really enjoyed this book! She has since begged me to pick up some of the fun items to use for her own math lessons that she saw Minna using.

The first activity Minna does is laying out multi-colored popsicles sticks tallying them as she went to count by 5’s to 100. She then uses a paper punches to punch out all sorts of fun objects such as hearts, leaves, stars, and more to count to 100 by 10’s. She continues on using a variety of other objects such a pom-poms, paperclips, and pasta. In the end, she decides on using a variety of all the objects she began to count and create with to create a 100 piece college of her home.

This book will be a great resource for any school or home use for children 3-6 years old. I’m encouraged to use some of the ideas displayed in teaching my own children. Math can totally be a lot of fun and mixing arts and craft project into the mix like the character in this story did can make it even more exciting for kids, especially for any child that learns primarily well with hands on activities. Highest recommendations!
