Boats: Speeding! Sailing! Cruising! (Things That Go! Series (Book 5) Review

boatsbook

Boats: Speeding! Sailing! Cruising! By: Patricia Hubbell, Megan Halsey, Sean Addy is the fifth book in the Things That Go! series. This book is the first I’ve owned from the series. Immediately after reading this book to my son and daughter a few times, I knew I’d be collecting the others. In, fact we’ve just ordered the Trains themed one for my 2 1/2 year old train obsessed son over the weekend. He’s going to be very excited about it, no doubt.

In Boats: Speeding! Sailing! Cruising! children will be in awe of the beautifully styled illustrations. I for one like that the colors were more muted that your typical children’s book which gave it a somewhat nautical feel. The writing is very simple and rhymes in a such a clever way to keep listening ears all that much more interested.

Throughout the book children will see and learn not just the names of different sorts of boats, but introduced as well to the various parts of boats! My children now know that some boats can have a galley, deck, cabin, engine, and head. And dear and near to my heart since living on coast and being apart of Schooner  Days in Rockland, Maine there’s a page that features old-time sailing ships. On this page my children learned that these boats have crow’s nest, stern, bow, figurehead, and much more.

What’s a boat without a crew? I love that there was a page on the crew which children can see pictures of the radio operator, first mate, chief steward, and chief engineer. Each and every page in the book can spark a question and bring a child to want to learn even more about a specific boat or person associated with boats mentioned. The book is recommended for children age 3-5 years old and it’s about 32 pages long. I know I enjoyed this book just as much as my kids!  My highest of recommendations.
