My Thoughts

The story of Stellaluna  has been quite the hit in our home. I remember first hearing this story being read by Anne Jackson on an episode of the Reading Rainbow as a very young child. When I found out that Scholastic Storybook Treasure’s was releasing a brand new fully animated DVD feature of  Stellaluna on the 21st of February 2012, I was extremely excited to view it myself as well as share it with my two young children!

The Scholastic Storybook Treasure’s version of Stellaluna does not disappoint! The animated feature follows very closely to the book and even adds a few songs to the mix. The runtime is 41 minutes long which isn’t too long or too short. I for one really enjoyed the included bonus features such as the read a long and sing a long!

Children can learn about accepting who they are, discover the differences of others and themselves, and making friends. Key things displayed are friendship, compassion, love, and being obedient. Your children will also learn a few things about bats and birds!

Being geared toward children ages 2-8, my 3 1/2 year old daughter has asked to watch Stellaluna several times since she has first seen it! I’m incorporating the feature into our homeschooling as we plan to spend a week learning all about bats and other nocturnal creatures. I also liked that with the DVD, a Activity Booklet was included featuring a maze, word find, and two coloring sheets!
