SST: The Man Who Walked Between The Towers {dvd review}

 Just released, a brand new collection from the Scholastic Storybook Treasures featuring four classic stories vividly brought to life. This collection as well at the others make the perfect DVD collections for school aged children whether at home or in the classroom! And to let you know,  I did a search and found study guides and lesson plans that revolve around each of these!

 The Stories…

“The Man who Walked Between the Towers” is a story of which is inspired by actual real life historical figure Phillipe Petit. It was my first time hearing about this great feet which took place in 1974 as the brave man famously crossed between The World Trade Center Twin Towers on a high wire. I must say he’s a lot braver than me when it comes to heights! A very inspirational and thought provoking tale, none the less!

“Crow Boy” is a Japanese story about a young boy that teaches children it’s okay to be different from everyone else. It teaches self esteem and how you should look deeper and not reject differences and point them out as odd.  I really enjoyed this story because it delights in the talent and individuality.

“The Dinosaurs of Waterhouse Hawkins”  is a wonderful true story about a Victorian artist, scientist, and visionary that built the very first life sized models of dinosaurs. This captivating tale follows Waterhouse’s story through triumph, loss, courage, and awe inspiring passion that shines through in his life long legacy that we all can enjoy today.

 “Miss Rumphius” is a true story about the authors great Aunt Alice Rumphius, who was inspired to make the world around her more beautiful with the talents she was given. She in turn sows seed upon seed of Lupine flowers wherever she happens to go. What a wonderful story for us to take in and to look within ourselves to make the world around us more beautiful in our own way.

Bonus Features Include…

Interviews with author Barbara Kerley and illustrator Brian Selnick of The Dinosaurs of Warehouse Hawkins; Spanish version of Miss Rumphius; Read-Along

Awards: Parents’ Choice Silver Award 2007; NAPPA Gold Award 2006; Parenting Magazine’s Best DVDs of the Year (2006)The run time of this whole collection is 58 minutes. You could take an afternoon and watch all the stories or you could break them up and focus on just one for the day or even week. So many possibility!  I was very happy with this collection and highly recommend it.
