What a Zoo! by Joanie Leeds and the Nightlights {review}

Joanie Leeds and the Nightlights is known from their 2010 Parents’ Choice® Gold Award-winning album, I’m a Rock Star. Though, we first discovered them though their latest album What A Zoo!

Geared toward children ages 2-9, this a fun and educational CD!  There are songs about teaching kids the number of legs on certain creatures called “All The Animals”, a song about the metamorphosis process in which a caterpillar transforms into a butterfly called “My Butterfly”, and Big Blue Whale to name a few! Our favorite tracks on this CD are Wimoweh, Happy as a Clam, & Pony Boy!

I’m going to be using this CD with my daughter to start teaching her new things about animals. For instance, today she learned all about Mosquitoes because of the song featured on this album about them. Perhaps tomorrow we will look up Sea Cows or Hummingbirds on the internet!

When asked, Why an album of animal songs?
Joanie explains: “Growing up in Miami, Florida, I developed a deep love and appreciation for the outdoors.”  After her brother became an environmentalist he taught her a lot about how our daily actions impact our planet.  She says she was inspired by her brother and has been writing animal songs for years, which made recording What a Zoo! easy and joyful for her.  Joanie continues saying, “The songs are meant to be fun, danceable, and humorous, and I hope the content also encompasses and encourages a larger message, for both children and adults.”
