A few weeks ago while searching for diaper covers on Esty, I discovered Zookies. I fell in love right away with the one of kind handmade, stylishly cute diaper covers! I also noticed some really cute burp cloth sets, bibs, and reusable snack bag sets that would be fun to own!I was given the opportunity to review a Zookies diaper cover for my baby boy. It took me awhile to decide which cover to get because all of the fun fabrics used are so adorable. I went with the “Pirate Booty” diaper cover.
I loved how personal and ready to gift the diaper cover I received was when I chose to review was! It was wrapped in tissue paper and around the diaper itself was a red ribbon tied in a bow. Attached with a safety pin was the instructions on how to care for the diaper and a cute business card. It always great to see such care when purchasing an item whether for yourself or as gift for someone else.
I’ve been using the “Pirate Booty” cover for over a week now with my prefold diapers and it’s been working out wonderfully on my 6 week old baby boy. The inner layer of the diaper covers is waterproof PUL (polyurethane laminate) and the outer layer is 100% cotton We haven’t had any leaks at all, I must say I’m extremely impressed! Note that for my own personal preference, I choose to review this cover with the double row of snaps option but note Zookies also offers the “Crossover” hook & loop closure.
Getting to know the Artist…
1.Why did you decide to start doing this on Etsy and how long have you been?
I was an elementary school teacher before having children. We knew we wanted me to stay home with the kids. What I didn’t know was how much I would love being at home with the kids. Our oldest will be starting kindergarten this fall. But my husband’s job is very demanding with an erratic schedule, so we thought it would be best to have someone at home for consistency (even once the kids are in school full time). I did not want to go back to teaching which is a rewarding job but very emotionally draining and time-consuming! I wanted to find something from home that I could do to justify staying home, while supplementing our income a bit. I used cloth diapers, so the idea came about that way. I began researching patterns, etc. eventually drafting my own, and began practicing on my nephew. The Etsy store opened in the summer of 2010. We launched our own website Zookiescrafts later in the fall.
2. What do you enjoy the most when creating your products?
Well, honestly, first, I love shopping for fabric! I am even getting my three-year-old daughter excited about fabric. I enjoy taking fabric and transforming it into something functional! Most of the time, I do my sewing either late at night or early in the morning. It is quiet except for the hum of the machine. It is my time to think or not much at all and just decompress.
3. Apart from creating things, what do you do?
I mentioned my previous career as an elementary school teacher. I have a wonderfully supportive husband and two happy, healthy children. I am active in church as a Sunday School teacher to the preschoolers and playing on the praise team. I also play with a community band. I always wanted to play the flute and decided to learn before I had kids. I enjoy it so much that I still do it. It is my one night out each week. I absolutely love performing. Other than that, I try to scrapbook, run, and read.
4. What inspires you?
What inspires me? This is probably a bit off topic, but I feel led to share. My father was adopted, and I decided to start looking for his mother about two years ago. I just found her in December of 2010 and we met her on Jan. 22 of this year. She was young and unwed and forced to give him up for adoption. She shared that she never even got to see him. So, seeing a mother see and touch her son for the first time was and is beyond description. I had prayed daily for this reunion for almost two years and to see it come to fruition is inspiring to me that prayer is a powerful thing. That relationships are important, and we as a society are often too busy for one another. I continue to thank God for reuniting this mother and son. The entire family is very large with my grandmother having 10 children in addition to my dad. What a blessing!!
5. In five years you’d like to be…?
In five years, I would like to be no other place than where I am right now. I have my health, my family and friends, and a job I love doing. God has truly blessed me, much more than I deserve, and I am humbled by it each and everyday.
I wouldn’t hesitate at all to purchase more Zookies diaper covers and other products in the future. I was really happy with the cover I was able to review. I can easily see myself coming back to Zookies not just for myself but for baby shower gifts too.
Zookies start at $15.00 ranging in sizes extra small (7-10lbs) to large (25+ lbs), burp cloth sets of 3 are $12.00, Set of two bibs for 10.50, and the reusable sandwich/snack sets are only $10.50
