The Gospel According to Lost by Chris Seay
The Gospel According to Lost by Chris Seay is a book I reviewed as part of the Thomas Nelson Publishers Reviewers.
From the Thomas Nelson Publishers website
An epic journey into the deepest mysteries of our faith.Lost is NOT just a television show. It has become larger than that—a massive story filled with mystery that has garnered over twenty million participants. Some might call them viewers, but one does not just watch Lost, one participates in it. It demands that you dialogue with the story, seeking theories and comparing yourself to characters. Lost breaks all the formulas for television, and in doing so has drawn together millions of people on a shared journey that explores life, faith, history, science, philosophy, hope, and the basic questions of what it means to be human. It is the seemingly infinite ideas, philosophies, and biblical metaphors that make this story so engaging.
The focus on faith and truth is never more clearly explained than in the words of John Locke as he questions Jack Shepherd asking “Why do you find it so hard to believe?” Jack responds quickly “Why do you find it so easy?” But Locke declares “It’s never been easy.” This tension between Faith and Reason drives every episode and story line. Locke summed this up as he explained to Jack “That’s why you and I don’t see eye-to-eye sometimes, because you’re a man of science…Me, well, I’m a man of faith.”
Chapter Topics
- Faith and Reason – The war within?
- Guilt –The single common denominator that binds everyone on the island
- Fate – Do we choose our path, or does fate happen to us?
- Quantum Spirituality – What if everything and everyone is connected?
- Dharma – Is there any truth to be found in Institutional Religion?
- Island Life – If we are made for the garden is it the consumer world that is killing us?
- Salvation – Will it ever come, and will we recognize it when it does?
Chris Seay’s fascinating book explores each of these elements in a spinning analysis of faith and metaphor that will attract a multitude of readers who desire to go even deeper into the journey.
My Personal Thoughts…
I’ve been a fan of Lost since the very first episode aired many years ago. What drew me to this series were the people. They weren’t shallow, they weren’t fake, They were real people with real issue like the rest of us. Sure they are stuck on a mysterious island where a lot of pretty strange things happen but despite not knowing all the answers, the growth of each characters is what keeps me watching.
Author Chris Seay does an excellent job interpreting how each character can some how relate to those in the Bible. I enjoyed the fresh look on this widely watched show compared to the Word. I can’t help but think to myself that taking pop culture and comparing it is much like how Jesus gave visuals to the disciples through many well known parables.
A story that truly touched me is found on the last two pages of this book. I don’t want to give away exactly what it is because I want others to experience it them for themselves. I know this much and if you have a heart you truly will be touched, challenged, and broken after completing this book. Note that The Gospel According to Lost is more than just thoughts and comparisons about the show Lost but it’s a tool to look within yourself to live more like Christ.
If you are a fan of Lost, this is a great book for you. I received this book free from Thomas Nelson Publishers as part of their BookSneeze book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

SYNOPSIS
The rich tradition of country cooking, the distinctive taste of Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey, and the heritage of rural America are all elegantly captured in Jack Daniel’s The Spirit of Tennessee Cookbook. Included are more than 350 recipes, stunning full-color photographs, and stories of the people, places, and traditions of Middle Tennessee.
My Thoughts…
Being from the south, I appreciate the JACK DANIEL’S THE SPIRIT OF TENNESSEE COOKBOOK quite a bit. Nothing say southern hospitality like a home cooked meal from the heart. This book is full of stories about Lynchburg, TN which is the birth place of Jack Daniel’s Distillery featuring photos that are historic as well as contemporary. I’m proud to say that after reading through this book that I learned more about southern culture being that I was born and partially raised in the deep south myself.
Be warned that this cookbook is not to be read on an empty stomach, I know I was completely hungry and my mouth was about watering as I flipped through the various Appetizers, Soups & Salads, Vegetables, Breads, Entrees, Outdoor Cooking, Desserts, Cakes & Pies, and Accompaniments. I found a biscuit recipe in this book that I’ve been making for my own family for years thanks to my own southern roots!
If you decide to pick up this book, you’ll find as I did that not all recipes in this book call for Jack Daniels Whiskey. For instance a recipe in this book called “Outside Burgers” which my husband and I threw together contained no alcohol at all. Thrown together, that’s the best phrase I have because most of the recipes you shouldn’t have to look much further than your own pantry to make a delicious foods, that is minding that you are already cultured and a have a taste for southern foods.
Real people, easy to make meals, and a bit of southern heritage…it’s doesn’t get much better than that. This cookbook would make a wonderful addition to any kitchen and a fantastic gift to give around the Holiday season!
