Review: Scholastic Storybook Treasures| Why Mosquitoes Buzz in Peoples Ears…and more African Folk Tales

February is Black History month and I’ve been doing a bit here and there teaching my children about this particular culture.  Lately, I’ve been incorporating the DVD’s offered by Scholastic Storybook Treasures to our weekly homeschooling curriculum. These DVD’s are great and I love that each DVD offers a read a long on screen for children to follow and classic storybook favorites vividly brought to life with narration of top actors and actresses.

The latest offering from Scholastic Storybook Treasures that we’ve been enjoying this month is called “Why Mosquitoes Buzz in Peoples Ears…and more African Folk Tales”. This collection has five great stories which totally embrace African culture in fun way, and two which have never been before released:  ”Not So Fast Songololo” and “Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters”. My children enjoyed all the stories in this collection but their favorite was “Who’s in Rabbit’s House” (Written by Verna Aardema, illustrated by Leo and Diane Dillon, narrated by James Earl Jones). My daughter paid attention to this tale 100% of the time and wouldn’t stop talking about it long after we had finished watching it.

If you know nothing of “Who’s in Rabbit’s House” you should know that it’s adapted from a Masai folktale, about a rabbit that can’t get into her house because a creature is hiding inside. The animated illustrations are of people wearing different animals masks and acting out the tale. My daughter also has been asking to watch it again and again!

Other stories that you’ll be able to enjoy feature African Jungle animals, a very hot hippo, a sweet story of a boy from south Africa spending a day with his Grandmother, a tale of how a West African village came to be, and so much more! This award winning DVD (CHILD Magzine’s Top 10 “Don’t Miss” DVDs (2004)) supports Cooperation; Friendship, and Problem Solving!

Review and Giveaway: Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: I Heart Minnie DVD

This coming Valentine and Easter Seasons, The Walt Disney Studios invites everyone to get the party started as the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse gang – Daisy, Mickey, Donald & Goofy – celebrate Minnie Mouse’s birthday. Releasing for the first time on DVD and Digital Copy, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: I Minnie will be made available for purchase nationwide on February 7, 2012.

Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: I Minnie has been packaged to include five, fun-filled episodes – each underlining the themes of friendship, teamwork, sharing and problem solving – and an all new bonus feature “You’re Invited to Minnie’s Birthday Party,”.

Our Thoughts…

We are huge fans of the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse over here and it’s no surprise that the I Heart Minnie DVD has quickly become a brand new favorite in our home. My daughter loves all the characters and is really enthralled with how the team works together to figure things out! My son who recently has turned one is also starting to pay attention when we watch the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse . And be warned the the theme song is going to get stuck in your head! Good thing it’s a pretty cute song.

This Mickey Mouse Clubhouse DVD, much like the others, focuses on making learning fun. There’s things like shape recognition, colors, problem solving skills and counting. My daughter also really liked that the DVD cover itself had activities to keep her happy on the reversible cover . How fun that not only can she watch a show that she loves but she can figure out mazes, and do other fun activities such as color how she’d like the featured cover to look and there’s even a place for her to write her name on who the movie belongs too.

The Episodes….

· Minnie & Daisy’s Flower Shower (All-New, Never-Before-Seen) – The botanical highlight of the year is in trouble, unless Minnie and Daisy can get their flowers to bloom! Together, they board the glove balloon to help coax the clouds to sprinkle much needed rain.

· Daisy’s Dance -Clap your hands and tap your feet! Join Daisy, as she gets ready for one of the most important events of her life––performing in the big talent show!

· Daisy’s Pet Project – The Pet Parade is almost here and Daisy needs to find the perfect animal for which she can love and care. But it’s not as easy as she thinks and soon she has three new friends: an elephant named Bubbles, a giraffe called Longfellow and a bunny called Captain Jumps-a-lot!

· Minnie’s Rainbow – After a brightly colored rainbow appears over the clubhouse, Minnie searches for the pot of gold that’s supposed to be at its end. Along the way, she meets a leprechaun and discovers that not all treasure turns out to be as she expected!

· Minnie’s Birthday – Today is Minnie’s birthday, but the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse friends need to set up her birthday party.

This particular collection offers not only the DVD but also a separate digital copy that allows parents to easily, quickly download the episodes onto a computer or secondary handheld device for on-the-go access. Total run time is approximately 120 minutes and not to forget features a special never before seen episode!

We would highly recommend  the I Heart Minnie DVD & Digital Copy! It’s a great collection that celebrates friendship and fun! I think it would make an awesome Valentines Day or Easter gift to receive! You can pre-order Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: I Heart Minnie DVD on Amazon right now for $14.99!

Holiday Gift Guide 2011: My NapPak {review}

We all know how hard to can be when out and about visiting family and friends and your child starts getting a bit tired. You’d love for your child to lay down somewhere but you hate to inconvenience others by asking for a pillow and blanket  leaving a mess for your host to clean up later. You could drag along your child’s pillow and blanket but who really wants to do all that, especially when you probably have other things to take along and keep up with.   I’m happy to say that there is a solution to this in a product called My NapPak.

My NapPak is an all-in-one sleep mat with attached pillow and fleece blanket! I adore this product more than words can say! It completely rolls up and can be shut using very strong velcro strips. There’s also a carrying handle great for taking this pak along or to hang up to store for trips out. I really like there’s no zipper attached that could potentially break or cause a little child using it to get hurt.

We were sent a NapPak in the Noah’s Ark design to review! It’s really cute and I like that the design is gender natural.  You can  have this product monogrammed with your child’s name on it. There are several options to choose to make it more personal such as choice of type face and color. I decided to just have our last name on it as when my daughter’s grows out of the NapPak, her little brother can use it.

This product holds up really well in the wash. It came out looking just as good as when it went in. I totally value products like this that aren’t to heavy for my washing machine to clean. Because as a mother of small children I know that their things constantly will be in the wash.

As much a I love this product it’s all about how it went over with my three year old daughter. Overall she loved it! It’s just her size at 24″ x 54″ long. She’s already learned how to unroll and roll it back up all on her own. She says the fleece blanket is super soft and very cozy. She can easily carry the nap pak along with her wherever she goes as it only weighs 3lbs. I’m really glad that she was to taken with it. She calls it her special sleeping mat.

Overall, it’s the perfect mat to take along to preschool, daycare, grandma’s house, and wherever else you may be going where your little one could possibly use a nap! You are definitently getting a top quality product! Designs currently available are Cowboys & Indians, Lil’ Princess, Camo, Play Ball, Under the Sea, and the Noah’s Ark.

My NapPak range from 49.99 and up depending if you’d like to monogram the blanket or not. Shipping is $13 for the first mat and $1 each additional map to the same address. This is must have product and it would make a wonderful gift!
