Review: Real Steel DVD & BluRay
Film Synopsis: Balancing gritty action and emotional heart, “Real Steel” is an inspiring and visually stunning film that takes audiences on an action-packed journey. Washed-up boxer Charlie Kenton (Hugh Jackman) scrapes by as a small-time robot-fight promoter as he tries to make a comeback. Against all odds he eventually succeeds—at least in the eyes of his son Max (Dakota Goyo). “Real Steel” is spectacular family entertainment that will have everyone cheering again and again.
If you haven’t already seen Real Steel or even if you have, there’s a good chance that you’ll probably want to grab your very own DVD/Blu Ray copy when it releases on the 24th of January! In my opinion, this a great movie that the whole family will enjoy especially for the men and boys in your life.
I’m not ashamed to say that we are a pretty geeky family. We love Dr. Who, Star Trek, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, almost any sci fi, pirate flicks, and anything pretty much to do with Robots. Real Steel takes the cake for every robot movie we have seen especially since it’s family friendly. Honestly I am sure most people will be skeptical in the sense because all they know is that it’s a movie about robot boxing . I’m here to say it filled with so much more than that although the robots boxing is pretty cool all by itself!
We really liked this movie! My 3 1/2 year old daughter loves robots and has asked to watch this movie several times since we first watched it. Now note that this movie is PG 13 and you have a child that gets frightened easily this could pose an issue. I didn’t think it was over the top violent or scary but to each their own opinion and standards. I would say to maybe pre-screen this or read up on some other reviews to decide for yourself it’s right for the under 13 crowd in your own home.
This movie is full of action packed themes, adventure, and heart felt story line that’s main focus on facing challenges, love, forgiveness, and second chances! Trust me, you don’t often find this wholesome of an action packed movie often. It’s no surprise that this one topped the theater charts for so long!
The DVD has lots of great extras! You’ll find the “Making of Metal Valley” and “Building the Bots”. There’s bloopers and an audio commentary with the director on the DVD disc. The blu-ray disc has even more bonus content including Real Steel Second Screen, deleted and extended scenes, “Countdown to the Fight – The Charlie Kenton Story” and “Sugar Ray Leonard: Cornerman’s Champ” features. Fan of the flick won’t want to miss out on all these great bonuses!
Real Steel is rated PG-13 and has a running time of 127 minutes. It is available on Blu-ray and DVD. Check out the trailer of Real Steel for a preview of the film below.

My family personally enjoyed this collection very much. My three and a half year old daughter was quite taken with The Story of Ping and the Snowy Day story the most. Though I’ve noticed her taking a like to a few of the others the more she has watched. She now keeps asking me when it’s going to snow. That might be a problem because it doesn’t snow too often where we live in Oregon. So this mom is crossing her fingers and hoping for a little snow. But until then we will continue to bundle up for family movie afternoon’s and night as we make Caldecott’s Favorites some of our very own!
