My four year old daughter always knew that mommy and daddy recycle certain things but never questioned really about where it went and what happened to it when it got there. She knows we have a bin in our kitchen that hangs on a cabinet that we put things like empty cereal boxes, milk jugs, juice containers, and egg cartons with they are empty. I’ve talked about it a bit, showing her that some of her favorite toys are made from recycled milk jugs and she thought that was neat how those things were reused. Now thanks to dad, musician, and recent children’s author Michael Franti, I can now shed the light more on the matter of reusing and recycling with a neat book called “Where in World is Away?”.
In the book Where in World is Away?, we meet two characters that discover what happens when something gets thrown away. I like how through out the story it displays the effect just throwing something away carelessly could harm the environment around us. My daughter was pretty concerned to see the effect that just throwing garbage on the ground could have on bugs, plants, and animals. I’m really glad she is starting to understand that ever action has a consequence though it may seem like no big deal at the time.
The book itself is very nice. The illustrations seem to come off the page and captivate the listener as well as reader. The story is well written in a poetic style. As a pretty eco consensus person, I really like that hard cover book itself is printed with soy ink and on environmentally friendly paper. There is also a companion read along CD which features the authors and family and friends.
If you are looking for a fun book to teach your children about reusing, reducing, and recycling, I highly recommend this title for home or classroom use! You can purchase Where in the World is Away? (self published book) for $19.99 at Micheal Franti’s website.
