“Irresistible …. A kind of Bridget Jones meets The French Chef.” – Dianna Marder, Philadelphia Inquirer

Julie Powell, nearing thirty and trapped in a dead-end secretarial job, resolves to reclaim her life by cooking in the span of a single year, every one of the 524 recipes in Julia Child’s legendary Mastering the Art of French Cooking. Her unexpected reward: not just a newfound respect for calves’ livers and aspic, but a new life-lived with gusto. The film version is written and directed by Nora Ephron and stars Amy Adams as Julie and Meryl Streep as Julia.

one of my funniest is really something my husband did We had just moved in to our new home and my husband turned on the oven to preheat it but did not look inside the oven and all the paperwork from the oven was still in there and he nearly got the new house on fire con5459(at)gmail(dot)com

One of the first nights I was having my in-laws over and cooking for them, I decided to make the chili that my mom always makes, that my husband and I both love. I started making it, but it didn’t seem like there was enough. I added more ingredients, but then it didn’t taste right. I ended up having my husband run back out to the store and get more ingredients to even it out. I went back and forth with ingredients until it tasted right to me and by then I had a huge pot of chili that probably would have easily fed 20 people! At least it was good and they liked it, so we sent them home with a bunch. It was funny and is something we still talk about.

My favorite book is Jane Eyre. I know that seems strange, but I’ve read it 3 times and something about it just has always fascinated me. I was just about the only one who enjoyed reading it when it was a mandatory read in high school!

Well, it’s not my funniest but scariest was when I left a black skillet on the stove and went out to check the laundry. A grease fire started and slightly burnt my kitchen cupboards. My oldest daughter quickly got the younger children outside. Once it was all over we could laugh about it.

funniest time was the first time i cooked raw chicken…i had never even felt raw chicken before. I was so grossed out I shrieked and threw it. It landed in the garbage disposal. My mom came running in thinking I had hurt myself. She rolled her eyes and made me fish it out of the disposal to throw it out. Oh, and this was all witnessed by one of my friends (i was so embarrassed)

My sister and I tried very hard one day to make peanut butter potato candy like my mom used to make us when we were kids. After many MANY tries all we had to show for our efforts was several sticky globs of sugary mashed potatoes that even the dog wouldn’t eat! We never did get the recipe right, but we had lots of fun trying. I’m pretty sure we stopped trying and went to the store for ice cream :)

I don’t know if it’s funny or not, but it IS embarrassing. I was making a cake from a mix and didn’t have my glasses on. I thought it said 1 1/2 c. water, but it only said 1/2 cup water. It was alot runnier and took alot longer to bake. :(

A favorite cookie recipe at our house:

    Chocolate Chip Crunchies

    Preheat oven to 375

    1 c. butter (2 sticks, melted)
    1 c. white sugar
    1c. brown sugar
    2 t. baking soda
    1 t. salt
    2 t. vanilla
    2 beaten eggs
    2 ½ c. flour
2 c. crushed corn flakes (just crush them with your hands)
    1-2 c. chocolate chips

Melt butter, add the sugars and stir. Add soda, salt, vanilla, and beaten eggs. Mix well. Then add flour and stir it in. Add crushed corn flakes and chocolate chips and mix it all thoroughly.

Form dough into balls with your fingers and place on a greased cookie sheet, 12 to a standard sheet. Press them down with a floured or greased fork in a crisscross pattern (the same method as peanut butter cookies.)

Bake at 375 degrees for 10 minutes. Cool on a cookie sheet for 2 minutes, then remove to a wire rack until they’re completely cool. (The rack is important – it makes them crisp.)

It was Thanksgiving of 2003, I believe. We lived in a house that we were renting and we had problems with the stove so the landlord exchanged the old stove for a “refurbished” model. We had never used this oven except for the stovetop. We decided to try and cook the turkey we received from my husband’s volunteer fire department. We followed all the instructions well. We put the bird in the oven and since it was going to be a while until it was done we went for a walk around the block. When we got back smoke was coming out our open window in our living room. My husband dashed inside and turned off the oven and opened it. The bird was black on the outside…sort of dry on the inside. It hadn’t even cooked all the time that it was supposed to and it had burned. Needless to say our oven wasn’t working properly. The funny thing was if we had waited any longer the house probably would have been next and since my husband was on the volunteer fire department and the turkey was from them we probably would have been the laughing stock for years to come.
