Educational Insights My First Microscope {Review}

Educational Insights My First Microscope is well suited for children ages 3-5 years old. It’s a winner of the 2014 Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Gold Seal Award 2014 Parents’ Choice Silver Award. It’s a must have to get little ones excited about science and ideal to be used till ready for a more advanced model.

P1160740 This microscope I found to be well made and the colors are perfect for a boy or a girl. The features include 8x magnification, two eye holes instead of the typical just one for easy use, large knobs and buttons perfect for a small child’s hands and grip. The specimen area is wide and large enough to view flat as well as larger items such as pine-cones, leaves, blocks, seashells, a favorite toy, or whatever else. There is a light which requires 3 triple A batteries. Batteries are sold separately. The bottom of the microscope has slip proof feet to keep the scope from going anywhere while in use.

P1160742 My three year old son was able to use this microscope without frustration. He tends not get the whole close one eye and look with the other thing so the fact that this one has a binocular like viewing is awesome. He uses this microscope a lot and it pleases me that his curiosity is rewarded instantly. I don’t have to worry about a more fragile model microscope and tend to just leave this one out for him to use whenever he pleases. All pieces are easy for him to turn on or rotate up or down to adjust the viewing. I would certainly recommend it!

Educational Insights Underwater Explorer Boat {review}

prod5115_4_lgEducational Insights Underwater Explorer Boat is pretty awesome! It combines imaginative play, science, and exploring altogether in an awesomely clever form. Children will be learning all about magnification and gravity without even realizing it!

P1160730The design is quite clever! Almost the entire underside of the boat is see-through allowing for 3x magnification of anything underwater! There’s no unwanted glare either when searching about. It features an orange buoy wrist strap to put on your child to prevent losing the boat. The bouy has some give and easily could be stretched to fit around my sons wrist. If you don’t favor the strap or buoy, with a little effort you can remove it. The strap has a break-away design for added safety.

P1160731The boat is child sized and quite easy to handle. My son really liked that the propellers on the back of the boat and the steering wheel was movable. The colors are bright and totally kid appealing. The boat is extremely durable and has been able to withstand the handling of my nearly 4 year old son very well.

I really like it can be used inside as well as outdoors. It’s versatile enough to use in the bathtub, water table, pool, beach, lake, and the kitchen sink. We’ve used it both inside and out, in water and grounded, and it’s still is looking great. We can’t wait to take it outdoors more during the warmer month of Spring and Summer. No doubt it will allows hours of learning and fun! My son often doesn’t want to get out of tub because he’s too busy exploring and rescuing the toys that floated to the bottom.

It’s really no wonder the Underwater Explorer Boat is a 2014 Parents’ Choice Award winner! I would highly recommend it if you are looking for a way to make water play more fun and educational too!

Interested in Purchasing? Educational Insights Underwater Explorer Boat is available for $10.49 on as of this posting. Suggested retail price is $14.99.

Buck Denver asks…Why Do We Call It Christmas? DVD Review & Giveaway

Disclosure (in accordance with the FTC’s 16 CFR, Part 255: “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising”): Many thanks to Propeller Consulting, LLC for providing this prize for the giveaway.  I did receive a sample of the product in exchange for this review and post.

A fun and exciting way to teach my children about popular Christmas traditions as well as the Birth of Christ has been through the “Buck Denver asks…Why Do We Call It Christmas?” DVD. This DVD as well as the rest of the series is created by Phil Vischer creator of the VeggieTales! There’s puppets, flash animations, catchy songs, and a clever story line that meshes everything one would wonder about the Holiday season altogether in an easy to understand way!

On this DVD, viewers will learn about Christmas and the many traditional things we partake in during the month of December. Some of the things covered include where we get the word Christmas from, where Jesus was born, the story behind the Christmas tree, about St. Nicholas, and much more! I’ll admit that even I learned a thing or two!

I’m so glad my 6 1/2 year old sat and watched the whole film. She said she liked the movie and learned a lot. I imagine though we’ll watch it a few more times before Christmas day and bring it out again next year. I will say that it’s somewhat fast paced which is right up her alley. My nearly four year old son didn’t sit through the whole thing but we’ll try again with him next year. Total runtime of the DVD is 60 minutes. Aside from the main feature there’s bonuses which include sing-a-longs, outtakes, and Christmas poems to watch.

In addition to the DVD, there some fabulous extras found on the What’s in the Bible website to use and incorporate with watching the DVD. There’s coloring sheets, family discussion guide to back up what was learned and covered on the DVD, printable invitations, ornaments, cards, and more to print out absolutely free!

I think this DVD is best suited for children age 4-10 years old and it’s really great for the whole family to enjoy together during this time of the year.We’ve been fan of this series for several years now and recommend this title as well as the others available highly.

Amy Grant In Motion: The Remixes {Album Review & Giveaway!}

I received a free copy of this album from Family Christian in exchange for writing a review. All photos and opinions are my own.

In Motion: The Remixes by musical artist Amy Grant is a fun album! This CD has been a fabulous go to on these sometime dark, cold, and dreary days! No more almost winter blues! I dare any one to listen and not smile or have their toes start taping!

This isn’t the first time I’ve listened to Amy. In fact, I remember listening to my Mom’s album when I was kid many years ago (I’m 30 now)! There’s just something pretty awesome about taking meaningful songs many years old and creating some new and exciting from each of them. Even my son and daughter ages nearly four and 6 1/2, never hearing Amy before are fans and her music and it totally gets them moving!

There are 10 songs total, all remixed well and perfectly suitable for the dance-floor! Any jam parties would be wise to include Amy’s album! I for one have opted to play this album for my weekly work out sessions and for when the house needs a pretty hefty cleaning. There’s just something about a good beat and positive lyrics to get me motivated and moving!

Track List

  • That’s What Love is For [Radio Edit]
  • Stay For Awhile [Radio Mix]
  • You’re Not Alone [Radio Edit]
  • Every Heartbeat [Radio Edit]
  • Better Than a Hallelujah [Gospel Radio Edit]
  • Find a Way [Big Room Radio Edit]
  • Baby Baby [Radio Edit]
  • Say Once More [Radio Edit]
  • Stay For Awhile
  • Mega Mix

The beat and sounds of each of the songs is different but all work together played in any order. My favorites are Stay for a Awhile, That’s What Love is For, & You’re Not Alone. I feel long time fans would be happy with this collection especially if they are into dance and club music.

Run-time is a little over 45 minutes in length. The length of the album makes it a perfect for working out whether doing aerobics, jogging, or whatever you wish!

Interested in Purchasing? Amy Grant In Motion: The Remixes can be bought in cd or mp3 album format.

Noah A Wordless Picture Book by Mark Ludy (Book Review & Giveaway)

Noah by author Mark Ludy is an exceptionally beautiful picture book! I was truly in awe at the amazing imagery and detail put into each and every page. The intricate details have been a delight to gaze upon again and again and make this Biblical retelling come alive! There are no words or verses other than Methuselah welcomes his grandson, Noah on the very first page.

As the story begins, we get a feel of the area and people Noah may have lived near and how he wasn’t very young in age. We see that God calls him to do this amazing task of building the Ark. The illustrations shows the feelings in the faces and body actions of the characters extremely well. We see how constructing as well as gathering animals as well as nurturing them may have been. We see Noah’s family grow ensuring that most of this certainly didn’t happen in a short amount of time either. From the call, being obedient, and a wait through the storm it ends with God’s delivering promise to not just Noah but us all.

An additional bonus is that the author made it a bit for fun for children studying the pictures to find a little mouse named Squeakers on each and every page in the book. It’s actually not as easy you would think to find the mouse but the challenge was welcomed by my nearly four year old son and 6 1/2 year old daughter.

As a parent, I would like to point out this this book could be scary or confusing to younger children. This is a pretty accurate book so there;s obviously shady people depicted and some images of the rain coming down to flood the earth and of the people not living for God outside of the ark drinking wine and partying. There’s nothing explicit or violent. Just use wisdom and be ready to explain and answer questions.This book gives a pretty accurate portrayal and I applaud it for that.

Overall, this book has been a joy and real blessing to share with my children when retelling the story of Noah. I think it would be a welcome addition to any home or church class.

markludyMark Ludy has written or illustrated eight children’s books including The FarmerThe Flower Man, The GrumpWhen I Was  a Boy I DreamedWhen I Was a Girl I Dreamed, and Jujo the Youngest Tribesman. When he’s not immersed in his sketchbooks, you’ll find him in schools promoting art and literacy. He lives in Colorado with his wife, daughter, and two sons.
