A fun and exciting way to teach my children about popular Christmas traditions as well as the Birth of Christ has been through the “Buck Denver asks…Why Do We Call It Christmas?” DVD. This DVD as well as the rest of the series is created by Phil Vischer creator of the VeggieTales! There’s puppets, flash animations, catchy songs, and a clever story line that meshes everything one would wonder about the Holiday season altogether in an easy to understand way!

P1160703

On this DVD, viewers will learn about Christmas and the many traditional things we partake in during the month of December. Some of the things covered include where we get the word Christmas from, where Jesus was born, the story behind the Christmas tree, about St. Nicholas, and much more! I’ll admit that even I learned a thing or two!

P1160716

I’m so glad my 6 1/2 year old sat and watched the whole film. She said she liked the movie and learned a lot. I imagine though we’ll watch it a few more times before Christmas day and bring it out again next year. I will say that it’s somewhat fast paced which is right up her alley. My nearly four year old son didn’t sit through the whole thing but we’ll try again with him next year. Total runtime of the DVD is 60 minutes. Aside from the main feature there’s bonuses which include sing-a-longs, outtakes, and Christmas poems to watch.

P1160722

In addition to the DVD, there some fabulous extras found on the What’s in the Bible website to use and incorporate with watching the DVD. There’s coloring sheets, family discussion guide to back up what was learned and covered on the DVD, printable invitations, ornaments, cards, and more to print out absolutely free!

I think this DVD is best suited for children age 4-10 years old and it’s really great for the whole family to enjoy together during this time of the year. We’ve been fan of this series for several years now and recommend this title as well as the others available highly.

NCircle Entertainment Back-to-School Review & Giveaway!

NCircle-Entertainment-Logo-e1412716656424

If  you are looking for some fun as well as educational media to back up as well as introduce certain learning concepts, you’ll want to check out NCircle entertainment! The following DVD’s are perfect for children age 2 to around 6 years old and range in numerous differences. There’s music and dancing, science, exploration, ABC’s, travel, and more!

ncircle3

The Wiggles: Apples & Bananas – On this DVD, The Wiggles feature many nursery rhyme songs. My kids are 6 and nearly 4 but still love the Wiggles though the group is geared more toward the younger crowd. Most of the songs my kids knew already but still enjoyed seeing each sung and acted out. The DVD is 65 minutes long and there are 22 songs total on it. Special features include a photo gallery and a episode from the Wiggle! TV Series about washing your hands.

Our favorite songs on this collection are This Little Piggy Went to Market, Itsy Bitsy Spider, and This Old Man! Overall it’s a great collection of songs and kids can learn numbers, reasoning, problem solving, communication, and literacy skills in fun musical way!

ncircle5

Octonauts: Deep Sea Mission – On this exciting DVD, join the Octonauts as they explore the hidden depths of the Midnight Zone! Peso must conquer his fears to treat a Vampire Squid! Dashi and Inkling go head to head with hungry Gulper Eels! Then, Barnacles, Kwazii and crew must rescue sea creatures before an underwater volcano erupts!”

My son and daughter ages 3 and 6 years old totally adore the Octonuats! My kids really like all the exploring, rescuing, and seeing their favorite characters doing their part in protecting all sorts of animals found in the sea! They make the dark somewhat unknown of the ocean a lot less scary for kids to learn about and that’s real winner. I love the take away due to the fact my kids will start spouting off random ocean creature facts throughout the day.

This DVD is 70 minutes long, you can easily sit and watch all the episodes or break it up and watch one at a time. There are a total of six episodes and a bonus feature teaching kids more about the marine life in six Creature Reports.

As a mom and home educator, I’m liking the educational value of this DVD quite a bit! I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend not just this DVD but the entire series!

ncircle4

Cat in the Hat: Show & Tell Sure is Swell! – My children ages 6 and 3 years old, girl and boy, like the Show & Tell Sure Is Well DVD! There’s a Spanish language option as well as English and runtime is 60 minutes.

I like that you can choose to play a couple of the adventures one day and save the others for later. We for the first time sat and watched the DVD with five episodes from start to finish and later discussed the seasons of the year, migration, growing up and changing, and how we see with our eyes! I know they are learning because my kids are always going around telling people facts they’ve learned!

ncircle2

Animal Atlas: Animal ABC’s – This DVD is a bit beyond my nearly 4 year old and 6 1/2 year old. It definitely has a good educational value though. Children not only can learn their ABC’s but will learn facts and be able to recognize specific animals. There are recognizable songs played throughout with lyrics pertaining to ABC’s and about the animals as well as insects. The imagery and animal scenes are interesting and the video quality looks good.

After going through the alphabet, simple words are spelled out and taught. So children will learn simple spelling too! My kids did enjoy seeing the animals but I’m not sure how big the returning playability will be for my kids but imagine it would appeal to kids who are still learning the things specified. Runtime is 60 minutes.

ncircle1

Sid the Science Kid: The Ruler of Thumb – Sid the Science Kid: The Ruler of Thumb – On this DVD, Sid teaches kids all about how to create charts, gather data, and much more in a fun and interested way. Not just scientific facts are learned about but the tools most scientist use as well such as rulers, magnify glasses!

There are four episodes which are The Sticker Chart, The Rolie Poliee, Enough with the Seashells, & The Whale Episode. DVD runtime is 115 minutes with additional bonus content. There’s a bonus music CD that has 9 songs from the series! My 3 1/2 year old son was very interested in watching this DVD and has asked to see it numerous times. He really liked the episode on charts and wants to make one for himself!

Adventure Time: The Complete Fourth Season Review

adventurets4

The two-disc DVD and single-disc Blu-ray release of Adventure Time was recently released! Fans both old and new have something to really be excited about with this collection! I’ve heard it said that this season has many fan favorite episodes! This collection features season 4 in its entirety of 26 episodes (286 minutes of goodness) and there’s a lot of great bonus content to be happy about too!

The special features such as the 19-minute Distant Bands: The Music of Adventure Time is truly something to be seen! I think it’s great to learn more about what how the songs were chosen and what elements they thought important to include. I love hearing from creative people on how the whole choice and selection process of what songs chosen was done.  The slipcase cover is neat featuring Marceline and changing from her hair up to down is fun and something collectors will find pretty awesome.

Adventure-Time-S4_1-500x280

My household really likes Adventure Time. My kids are ages almost 4 and 6 1/2 year old and really like the fun adventure and fantasy game like elements. It’s amusing, it’s clever, and though over the top at times all nestled together perfectly. Daring quests, unicorns, Gnomes, ogres, Candy kingdoms, penguins, and interesting worlds… what more could you ask for? We’ve recently been watching back season on Netflix to see what we’ve been missing out on and aiming to start collecting all the season for ourselves.

Adventure-Time-S4_2-500x400
I asked my husband about why he likes Adventure Time. Here’s what he had to say:

It’s hard to do off-the wall story-lines with what seems to be random elements, but Adventure Time has a cohesive world with recurring characters that bind everything together.
This prevents it from being a series of random events that don’t matter.

Relationships grow, change, and make a difference later in the series. The show is mostly an anthology show, and plots don’t tend to continue past the episode, but here and there something that happens in one episode will crop up again in a later one.

Most of all, the show is strange and funny, and strangely funny.

sandwiches adventure time season 4We’d totally recommend Cartoon Network: Adventure Time the Complete Fourth Season
to any fan or collector of the series. Though the episodes stand alone well enough I would recommend seeing these from the very beginning too!

This set would make a fabulous gift for anytime but a great choice for a fan during the Holiday season! The suggested retail price of either the Blu-Ray or DVD is $17.99 and $24.99.

Transformers Rescue Bots: Mystery Rescue {Review}

rescuebots

TRANSFORMERS RESCUE BOTS: Mystery Rescue came out last month from Shout Factory Kids in collaboration with Hasbro Studios. If you like me haven’t heard of it you are probably thinking Transformers is for older kids. Well, let me tell you that is version is perfect for kids ages 3 and up. It features robots that transform into rescue vehicles like a police car, helicopter, fire truck, and a bulldozer. Their main objective is to protect town and people from bad situations instead of bad guys. So if you are worrying about violence and intensely scary situations you’ll be pleased to know you won’t find that in this show.

Transformers-Rescue-Bots-post-2

My son that’s three and a half years has been all about the Rescue Bots for the last couple of weeks. Not a day has gone by when he hasn’t been role playing with his toys the episodes he has seen He also has been going around singing the theme song and asking for Transformer coloring sheets (my fridge is literally covered in these robots).

I’m really glad to be able to offer him wholesome entertainment and that it’s available. It’s totally geared for his age as he’s growing up and wanting to see more big boy things but not obviously ready for a lot of the cartoons that are out there. It seemed like it happened over night that’s he’s been all about super heroes and robots!

Transformers-Rescue-Bots-post-1

On this DVD, there are five episodes with complete DVD runtime of 110 minutes. This DVD is following a few others but stands well with the stories on it’s own, though I would recommending getting the entire collection. This DVD has a mystery theme so that makes it pretty fun for the month of October. Lots of events are going on that just don’t make any sort of sense but the Rescue Bots are there to save the day! the stories were written well and though there’s a bit of spooky here and there, it’s never frightening! Episode titles are:

  • Countdown
  • The Haunting Of Griffin Rock
  • Spellbound
  • Blame The Gremlins
  • Feed The Beast

I believe my son will be watching the Rescues Bots for awhile and even my 6 year old daughter likes to watch along side him. It’s a great show that is full of fun, action, and positive themes! I highly recommend it!

Interested in Purchasing? The suggested retail price of Transformers Rescue Bots: Mystery Rescue is $14.93 and can be purchased on Amazon.com as of this posting!

Jack and the Cuckoo-Clock Heart {Giveaway & Review}

JACK_and_The_Cuckoo-Clock_Heart_300dpi-785x1024-600x782

Jack and The Cuckoo-Clock Heart kept me captivated from beginning to end. The visual style of the movie is truly fantastic and shows the emotions of the characters though visual whimsy. The look of the film is a bit of steam punk with lots of eye candy of interesting designed gadgets and background surroundings. The story we found to be finely crafted and felt that it flows smoothly over the course of the film. I didn’t realize it was going to be more on the musical side but felt it fit exceptionally feel. A lot of thoughts, feelings, and emotions definitely will be invoked upon viewing this such film of the heart.

jack-and-the-cuckoo-clock-heart_34

I would urge parents to take into consideration the pg rating. In fact, I wouldn’t recommend it for children under the age of 13. There’s nothing particularly awful as in gore or swearing. It’s not graphic. I just believe the maturity of those who may be viewing this film be taken into consideration. It’s about love and we all know that it can get messy with our heart sending feelings to our brain we sometimes just can’t make sense of.

Jack-and-the-Cuckoo-Clock-Heart-Trailer-1

The bonus features on this DVD I enjoyed. Each of the characters in the movie are broken down and explained and there’s a segment on how the movie was adapted from book. It’s always nice to see the behind the scenes to truly appreciate all the hard work that went into making such a engaging film. All features are in French with English subtitles. The runtime of the movie is 89 minutes and it didn’t feel too long or too short. I would definitely recommend seeing it and if you’ve seen A Monster in Paris you’ll pleased to know the same producers are part of this one.

Interested in Purchasing? Jack And The Cuckoo-Clock Heart can be pre-ordered right now before it’s release date on October 7th, 2014 on both DVD & Blu-Ray.

Thunder And The House Of Magic DVD

Thunder-House-Magic

Thunder and the House of Magic is a movie about an abandoned cat that happens upon a new family in a curious way. The story is full of whim and wonder leaving you wanting to know what’s going to happen the next. Who would expect anything less when the cat is taken in by a retired magician of all people! Trouble does however brew when their home is threatened from being sold out from under them. The animated visuals of the movie are ever so detailed and quite capturing! If you’ve seen A Turtle’s Tale and Sammy’s Adventures: Escape from Paradise, you’ll know what I am talking about and are sure to be taken with this film too!

This movie I would recommend sitting down and watching as a family or screening it first. There are some scenes that could pose a threat in being just a little too frightening for little ones. There’s a few seconds where the cat is rummaging around in the attic and a bunch of spiders are crawling around. So if a fear of bugs especially spiders is preset in a child about to watch this movie, I would take that into consideration. There’s also the inhabitants of the house of magic trying to scare off potential people that want to move into the home.

thunder2

My only issues is that the villain of this movie kept saying the word damn and that he got so enraged that he went after the cat because he was allergic to him with a gun. So it’s a bit violent but not graphic and it ends well, despite some of the chaos.

Lessons that can be learned from this film are working together, friendship, and the importance of family. The movie is 85 minutes long and kept the attention of both my kids from start to finish. We had some great discussions after about the story and the characters.

Thunder and the House of Magic will be available on Blu-ray and DVD exclusively at Walmart on September 30th but can be pre-ordered now!
