I am happy to introduce to you Nia Bug! If you like anything handmade I’m sure you’ll love the products offered by this crafty mother or two with another on the way in December! If you swing on over to Nia Bug you’ll see many beautifully crafted and well thought out products in rich colors such as diaper wipe case covers, headbands, hats in all sorts of styles, and adorable baby booties!
I was given the opportunity to review the hat pictured above and I love it! It fits me perfectly and the three color combination she chose go so well together! The flower tops this hat off giving it that special something! I’m definitely a fan and will be looking to this shop for more great designs when I get the itch for a vividly thought out hat ,whether for myself or for my children.
I really did enjoy getting to know Melinda. If you are wondering how we crossed paths, it was through her husband’s Super Secret Podcast for Husbands which can be found on Itunes. Basically my husband heard her husband mention her love for creating things and about her shop Nia Bug and it went from there. I love getting to know the creator behind whatever handmade items I purchase or would like to purchase. I figured I would ask a few questions for you to get to know more her and her shop Nia Bug as well.
1.Why did you decide to start doing this and how long have you been?
I learned how to crochet when I was a little girl. I pretty much only knew how to make a square. When I was in college (6 years ago) making scarves was a big thing, so I picked back up on crocheting. I made scarves for people for Christmas and birthdays because I was a poor college student. After awhile I got a little brave and started crocheting baby blankets as gifts for my friends’ kids. I learned how to read crochet patterns about 3 years ago and then started getting a little more adventurous in creating my own patterns. I like to take ideas from looking at pictures I look at and see if I could figure out how to make something crochet like it, especially stuff for my kids.
In October 2010, I realized I needed a hat for my daughter, so I found a pattern and tried to make one. It turned out great and I decided to tweak the pattern a little and add holes for my daughter’s pigtails to go through. After making several hats, I decided to try and start selling them. Nia (Alivia) is my daughter and I call her my Nia Bug.
2. What do you enjoy the most when creating your products?
I love when people ask me, “can you make_____?” because I love to try new things! It keeps things different and exciting. I don’t have to do the same thing all the time. I also like to create things that other people have never done before. That can be hard to do because there are so many talented crafters out there, but that is one of my goals.
It’s also a kind of therapy for me! I can sit and crochet and not think about anything but counting the stitches. It also helps me feel like I am accomplishing something while we sit around and watch TV or my husband is podcasting (Super Secret Podcast for Young Husbands on iTunes).
3. Apart from creating things, what do you do?
I am a youth pastor’s wife and am very involved with our youth group and church. I love getting my mind off my own problems by reaching out beyond myself and thinking of others for a while. My hope is to show the love of Jesus to everyone around me.
And of course, running around after my 1 and 3 year old keeps me very busy!
4. What inspires you?
My children definitely inspire me. They are my biggest fans! My husband and mom are also a huge support to me. I know that if I ever get discouraged they will cheer me on and get me through it.
5.In five years you’d like to be…?
I have two kids now and one on the way (due Dec). My husband and I have always wanted at least four kids, so I hope to have all of them by then. I want to continue creating new things for my family and others. Hopefully with a few new designs between now and then. I will be homeschooling my children and continue serving alongside my husband with whatever ministry he is doing.
Nia Bug is offering one of my readers one of her custom made necklaces! (They are so pretty!)
