Learning Resources Simple Tape Measure {Review & Giveaway!}

2013-04-08

The Learning Resources Tape Measure is a must have learning tool for young children. It’s perfect for reinforcing early math skills. This product is largely sized but not overly making it ideal for little hands to control and use. The tape measure has a soft-grip handle as well as a manual wind up crank. The crank is great for little ones to practice and master fine motor skills by reeling it back up. The colors are of green, purple, and yellow making making it gender neutral i.e good for either a girl or a boy.

Learning Resources’ Riddle Moo This Game {Review & Giveaway}

prod3772_3_lgAs a family that loves to play games of all kinds, we are always on the look out for those with very big playability factors. And as a homeschooling Mom, any game I can use in the classroom to educate my two children is usually a winner! This year Learning Resources released the game Riddle Moo This! and gave us an opportunity to try it out and I couldn’t be happier with the result of that.

prod3772_1_lg

Riddle Moo This is a game recommend for children ages 5 and up that focuses improving and enhancing vocabulary as well as reasoning skills. The game itself is very appealing to my kids ages almost 5 and 2 years old. My kids are pretty keen on games and sometimes really surprise me with how much they already know (especially my two year old whiz of a son). They totally loved the farm animal theme and the quick pace of Riddle Me Moo and have asked to play it over and over again!

The contents of this game included four generously sized different colored buzzers that each make their own sound such as a dog, horse, cow, and a rooster. The sounds ensure when you play you’ll be able to recognize who buzzes in first with the correct answer! Do note that each buzzer takes 2 AAA batteries that are not included. Also these buzzers can be pretty loud if not placed directly on the table! My kids tended to love the buzzers a lot and were pretty excited about using them during game play and even when it was over!

There are 150 double-sided riddle cards featuring 300 word clues total. There are two different colors of cards, the blue for a harder level of play and the red for easier which features more age-appropriate common nouns . You can choose to just use one color set or you can mix them to make things more interesting. There’s also an advantage to any player that picks up a Barnteaser card which challenges a child even more by making up their own riddle by excluding one of the clues on that card! Goal is first person that correctly answers 10 riddles correctly wins but if you wanted too, you could mix things up to your liking.

2013-02-07

This game is a total of four players and there will need to be reader of the cards which could be a parent, teacher, or another child. The kids could even take turns being the reader. Storing this game is a breeze. The box is very durable and the buzzers and game cards sit snugly inside without shifting around. Just be sure not to turn the box upside down or you might have a mess of cards when you take it out to play again.

Overall, we really enjoy the game and are looking forward to lots more use of it. Any brain boosting game that my kids can excited about and can be challenged by in improving their vocabulary and thinking skills is a total winner!

Want it? You can purchase Riddle Me Moo at Learning Resources or on Amazon.com for $27.95.

Overall Thoughts…

This DVD is great for teaching children about the stories commonly known by Asian cultured people. Stories support being generous, the importance of community, and to use caution in talking to and approaching those they don’t know! I thought all the stories on this DVD were winners and my kids thought so too! We really enjoyed this collection and are highly recommending it to any home or school video library! We are giving it five out five stars and telling everyone we know with children hoping they’ll add a little more culture to their lives and delve deeper into these fun tales!

“The Red Hen…and more cooking stories” Scholastic Storybook Treasures DVD {Review}

RedHenSSTDVD-NS

My children ages 4 and 2 years old were introduced to the story of The Red Hen for the very first time this past weekend. This story is truly a classic and known by nearly everyone both young and old. It’s a story full of good virtue to take to heart demonstrating that if you aren’t willing to help, then you don’t deserve the end product. Brought to life, I praise Scholastics Storybook Treasures with their latest released DVD The Red Hen…And More Cooking Stories and highly recommend picking it up for yourselves.

This version of The Red Hen is one by the Caldecott Award winning father-daughter team of Ed Emberley and Rebecca Emberley. The story goes as such, Red Hen finds a recipe for a Simply Splendid Cake and asks her friends the cat, the rat, and the frog to help with the preparations. But it seems as though her friends want no part in the cake until it’s ready to eat. The voice overs are very lively and the illustration style is quite catching to view. My kids really liked seeing this book as well as the others brought to life and have since asked to watch the DVD over and over again.

Stories on the DVD:

THE RED HEN (Written and illustrated by Rebecca Emberley and Ed Emberley, narrated by Walter Mayes) Filled with humor and sparkling illustration, this is the classic story of Red Hen and her adventures in baking.

BREAD COMES TO LIFE (Written and illustrated by George Levenson, narrated by Lily Tomlin) Watch each step of how to bring bread to life, from the sowing of the seeds to the shaping and baking of the bread dough.

HOW DO DINOSAURS EAT THEIR FOOD? (Written and narrated by Jane Yolen, illustrated by Mark Teague) These mischievous dinosaurs show that burping, spilling and playing with one’s food are not the best ways to enjoy a meal.

ARNIE THE DOUGHNUT (Written and illustrated by Gerald McDermott, narrated by Michael McKean) When Mr. Bing buys Arnie in a doughnut shop, Arnie realizes he must persuade Mr. Bing that a doughnut can be more than just a sweet snack.

Bonus Features:

· Easy-to-follow recipe for how to bake your own splendid cake!
· Read-Along captioning which is wonderful learning and teaching aid for pre- and young readers.
· Online Printable PDF Coloring Sheet to go Along with the Story of The Red Hen!

Overall Thoughts…

Total run time of this collection is 56 minutes plus extras. The stories are ones to take to heart filled with inspiration to bake and cook, problem solving, being cooperative, being a friend, and more! We really enjoyed this collection and are highly recommending it to any home or school video library! We are giving it five out five stars and telling everyone we know with children ages 2-7!

Buy it: If you’d like to add this set to your own collection, you can order The Red Hen and more cooking stories on Amazon.com for $12.99 as of this posting.  It’s also available for purchase on New Kideo as well. This would be a great set to gift during the Spring season or Easter Holiday coming up too!

All About Me Family Counters by Learning Resources {Review & GIVEAWAY!}

2013-02-06

The All About Me Family Counters by Learning Resources are an excellent manipulative set to own! My daughter and son ages four and half and two years old have been enjoying using these counters during school and play time quite a bit. I for one think that these counters are great to use for teaching about colors, sequencing patterns, counting, and much more!

This set of manipulative’s is 72 pieces and comes in 6 different shapes and colors. The colors are orange, blue, green, purple, yellow, and red. The shapes include a cat, infant, girl child, boy child, a man, and a woman. I like that with the shapes, children can put together a set of their very own family! I found these counters very durable and if needed easy to wash after use.

One way I’ve used The All About Me Counters with my children is practicing pattern sequencing. I downloaded the additional exclusive content to use with the counters on the Learning Resource Website, laminated those pages for use after use! Teaching children recognize patterns and sequences is key for future understanding of math concepts and functions. I think starting children out with a set like this one is a must. And it totally helps that these counters are so cute, colorful, and eye catching too!

I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend The All About Me Counters to anyone. There’s not one thing I dislike. The kids love them, there’s additional online content to use with the counters, they are stored in their own bucket, easy to clean, and can be used in so many different ways whether to educate, to have fun, or both!
