Egg-cellent News!

At 19 1/2 weeks old, our Golden Sex Link chicken “Goldie” laid an egg. This is the first egg from our flock of six chickens.  The excitement from our household can’t be covered in writing, you just had to be here. The kids are beyond thrilled and I’m happy all of our hard work is paying off. We are hoping the first egg brings on more. Time will tell in who else will start laying soon. The goal for us is to be able to share with friends/family and not have to purchase eggs from the grocery store if we can help it.

Our Chickens are 16 Weeks Old!

We are pretty excited over here as our chickens turned 16 weeks old a few day ago. Chickens at the earliest are known to start laying eggs at this age. It’s truly been amazing to watch how fast growth takes place. Raising them has been a great learning experience for everyone in the family.

A Kid’s Guide to Keeping Chickens is a must have book for any family planning on raising chickens. This book a plethora of information and answers just about any question one may have about starting, caring, and properly nurturing your backyard chickens. In being recently new to the world of chicken I did a lot of research before bringing chicks home and I hadn’t come across a book as good as this one. When I say I checked out a lot of books, we are talking a lot. The reason I checked out so many was because my aim was not just to raise chickens but to learn as much as we could about them for our homeschool studies.

Meet the Girls!

We took the plunge a few days ago and added half a dozen chicks to our family! We’ve been wanting chickens for awhile and were finally able to do so. I’m delving deeper into the world of Urban farming and am very excited about it. I’ve been researching books, the internet, and asking those I know with chickens in the city many question so as to have a decent hold on the ropes needed the give the proper care needed.
