Yuletide Ice Cube Fair {Book Review}

vyule

I admit, it’s certainly fun to get swept into all the activities and gift giving and receiving but as long as we don’t forget the true meaning of the season. The Veggie tale book Yuletide Ice Cube Fair reminds us of the greatest gift of all. It’s not what appears to be the best, biggest or brightest but in fact the greatest gift is Christ Jesus who gives us life eternally.

My nearly four year old son and six year old daughter are getting older and getting excited for the Holidays and I certainly want to make sure they are reminded often of why we truly celebrate. I prefer to have books such as this one around to read to them and have them read on their own as a reminder. They really like the Veggie Tales so this book is must have for us.

In this story, the town is having a Ice Cube Carving Contest. In this contest they are instructed to carve what Christmas means to each of them. Each turn of the page kept my kids captivated. The story is written in rhyme and that kept the story flowing quite well.

My children liked seeing the different sculptures that were created by each of the Veggie characters. None of the sculptures were bad things such as Christmas feasts, trees, and the like. My kids piped up that they enjoyed many of those things themselves. Though only one sculpture truly captured why we celebrate the season!

In how the story ended, it’s a truly humbling reminder that the greatest gift came into the world in way that wasn’t elaborate in the worlds eyes. This book can be a wonderful conversation starter about sharing the love of Christ the greatest gift of all and living with a servants heart not just during the season but everyday!

This book is 24 pages long and it’s soft cover format and size of 8×8 makes it easy to bring along when out and about. I’m sure we’ll be bringing this book out every Christmas season!

The Legend of the Candy Cane

The Legend of the Candy Cane written by Lori Walburg & Illustrated by Richard Cowdrey is a classic you’ll want to pull out every Christmas season. The story beautifully and inspirationally takes an item associated with the Holiday season and uses it to tie Jesus Christ to Season. I’ll admit that after reading this story, I’m reminded of the great sacrifice that was made any time I see a Candy Cane.

The illustrations are gorgeous and do an exceptional job of drawing you in. My kids were both truly captivated with every turn of the page. The story starts when a man comes to town to open a store and with his arrival he is able to share the true meaning of Christmas with the town in a delightful and creative way. I didn’t believe the book was over my 3 or 6 year olds head. In fact, they’ve gone around telling other all about the candy cane from the shape to the colors on how it relates to the greatest gift they’ve received.

The story isn’t too long. There are 30 pages in this board book and it’s easy enough for my six year old to read all by herself. I’ll be putting this book out on the coffee table to be read every holiday season as a reminder of why we do truly celebrate Christmas. Ideal for 3-7 year old children but I feel anyone can be blessed by the story.

Interested in Purchasing?  The Legend of the Candy Cane can be bought in board book  version on Amazon.com for $9.99. There are however a variety of other versions ranging from $2.99-$12.00 that might work best for your own family.

The One Year Devotions for Active Boys Review

activeboyThe One Year Devotions for Active Boys is a great choice in getting boys engaged and excited about growing with God. What I like is that this devotional can be started anytime of year! There’s no specific day of the week or year marked just days so there’s no need to feel like you have to start at the beginning. The devotions and activities are applicable to the month each resides in meaning there are seasonal activities and devotions that would be based upon upcoming Holidays and the like.

Each of the devotions always has a section to pray and then a Bible verse to conclude what was just read, in-between there is usually an activity or experiment, word puzzle of some kind, weird fact, or wacky laugh. I would recommend if reading through this devotion with a boy to look ahead so if an activity comes up, you can set some time aside and have material on the ready to get really hands on. It doesn’t apply to everyone but I know sometimes the message is better remembered with an additional activity. I think the authors of this devotional are awesome for taking that into consideration.

The devotions are easy to read, pretty engaging, and quite applicable to boys around the ages of 7-12 years old. I felt that the devotionals weren’t dated in the least and appreciated that the devotions span over many ages. This is a great book to pick up to start that daily habit of spending time with God! Young boys will be learning about how to apply the messages of God’s word and act it out in their own life! I most certainly recommend it!

If you are interested in purchasing, The One Year Devotions for Active Boys is $10.79 right now on Amazon.com! It would make a wonderful book to gift that special boy in your life!

Moses Leads the People {Book Review}

_240_360_Book.1312.cover

The Adventure Bible Moses Leads the People introduces children to the story of how God delivered the Israelites from Egypt. This ZonderKidz I Can Read Book is ideal for children ages four through eight years old. My 6 year old daughter has moved beyond beginner readers and had no issues when reading through this book on her own. Little if any help was given on my part on reading the story. We’ve read it together as a family and my daughter has picked it up to read on her own several times.

There are 32 pages in this book. I felt the story was light yet accurate. It begins when God is speaking to Moses in the burning bush, goes through the plagues & struggles, ending with Moses and the people crossing of the Red Sea. Every page features well done illustrations that aren’t comical, which is appreciated. The story isn’t wordy and it’s straight to the point. The words are easy to read for children. At the end of the book there’s a page that a page that features People in Bible Time with a short bit of information about Moses & his brother Aaron, there’s a Bible verse and an area called Words to Treasure which talks about the story just read and reminds us of how God gives us strength to carry on and salvation in Him.

I would recommend this book! It’s a great way for a child to learn about the Bible that’s on their level. This book and the others in the series have gotten my kids even more excited about learning about our God and the people found in the stories of the Bible. I like this book as the others in the series to use as conversation prompts and a way to dig deeper into how God was moving in the lives of his believers.
