The Beginner’s Bible Daniel And The Hungry Lions is taken from the Beginner’s Bible series. It spotlights this well-known Old Testament story in an easy to understand way. Children age two through five years old are the hopeful audience and I feel it hits that mark.
The book is twenty-four-pages long and the sizing is 8×8. It’s a nice size for bringing along and taking up residence on a child’s bookshelf. It has a cut-out design that’s appealing and the board book format is especially nice for the toddler/preschool age range.
My youngest is 15 months old in three days. She enjoys looking at this book and listening to me read it. She points things out in the book like the lions, the stars, sun, and the expressions on the character faces saying the word for each. While the message of being bold, having faith, and trusting God may be lost on her, I still find her enjoying the story and learning as we go through it.
I find the story to be a spot on portrayal in a simplified format that young children can understand. It starts with introducing Daniel as a man of God, followed by those that didn’t like him coming up with a plan to get rid of him, the King making a law to only pray to him, Daniel continuing to pray to God, getting thrown into the lions den, and ending with him not being harmed and the King changing the law that all should pray to God.
The illustrations are bright and colorful. The details in the characters expressions are spot on. Nothing appears very scary at all which is good for younger children that may avoid or be disturbed by such imagery.
My six-year-old son can read this book on his own just fine not needing any help with the words. I think it’s great for intermediate readers where as some of the words and sentence length may prove difficult for beginners.
I can recommend this book for home and church libraries. A simple retelling that gets the point across and opens the doors for further discussion in how we no matter what an age can live a life like Daniel.
The Beginner’s Bible Daniel And The Hungry Lions can be found on Amazon.com as well as other retailers in digital, paperback, and board book format.
