The recent release of The Octonauts: 12 Rescue Missions DVD I can get behind with excitement! The Octonauts series has a huge educational value. They teach children all about marine life, endangered species, environmental issues, working together, caring for the world around us, and so much more. The age this would have the most impact on I feel would be children ages 3-8 years old. Being a fan of the series for many years now, I’m pleased it’s still going strong and making more and more exciting action-packed, interesting, and educational filled episodes.
On this recent release, there are twelve episodes. Each episode averages between 10 to 14 minutes. I like having my children watch just one episode at a time and then we later discuss what happened and what important fact and other information they learned from it.
Since I homeschool my children I am using this DVD in our nature/science studies during the school year and through the Summer season. After an episode, we often use the internet or library to learn more about whatever creature was featured in the episode we watched together. We may also spend time doing a craft or drawing to further the learning process. Hands-on learning with video works really great for my children in retaining what was taught.
A great part of this DVD and the others in the series is that following each episode there are “Creature Reports”. These reports point out the facts about each animal mentioned in the episode as the story goes along. It features not just the animated version of the creature but also includes real life photos of them too.
We adore the characters, sing-a-long songs with the catchy tunes, and all the creature saving that goes on. There’s such fun, learning, and adventure with the Octonauts that I can’t hesitate to recommend it enough.
Run time is 160 minutes total.
