Slow Cooker Desserts by Jonnie Downing
has me excited about using my crockpot for more than just main courses. I absolutely love the idea of having a dessert going in the slow cooker. In cooking in this way, it frees me up from having my oven running all day and overheating the house! I honestly had no idea so many delicious goodies could be cooked in such a manner. Most of the recipes found in this cookbook take minimal prep work and need little if any checking on before ready to enjoy!
This cookbook is printed on glossy paper. It features many beautiful full-color photos of the desserts to be made. Almost all the recipes feature a photo of what it should look like in completion. There is an introduction, recipes by chapter, conversion chart, recipe index, acknowledgements, and an about the author section within. The chapters are as follows;
- Cakes and Desserts
- Cobblers, Crisps, And Other Fruit Desserts
- Custards and Puddings
- Cookies, Brownies, and Bars
- Fruit Compotes, Spreads, and Sauces
- Emergency Desserts
There are over 50 recipes in this book. The introduction is helpful in providing information as what tools you’ll need to have on hand to re-create some of the recipes in this book. The tools include a spring-form pan, ramekins,bread pan, and so forth. Not all the recipes require anything other than the crock-pot but I figured this is important information to know before purchasing this book. I would have liked to know! But keep in mind most of the recipes can be made without those tools which makes this book one of my go-to desserts books!
Each of the recipes features the yield, prep time, cooking time, and short note from the author. I love short notes as it makes the experience a little more personal.
I’ve made the pound cake recipe in this book for my family. The results were favorable! I had no idea I could cook a cake in my crockpot. Now we did run into the dessert sticking and the cake getting a little too done on one side. But I feel that was more my crock-pots fault not a recipe issue. Other than one side being a little too done, the cake was moist and delicious. It had perfect pound cake texture and taste! After such good results, my family has been pointing out what they’d like me to try next such as some of the varieties of rice pudding and cobblers!
Overall, I would recommend this cookbook! It’s a lovely addition to my collection of cookbooks and I feel like it will get a lot of use especially with the holidays just around the corner. I’ll be spending less time in the kitchen and more time with my family and friends! It may be slow cooking but it’s fast in getting it going!
