In the Good Samaritan, children learn the answer Jesus gives to a smart man about what one should do to receive eternal life. He first says we must love God and goes on to say we should love our neighbor. The man goes on to ask who our neighbor is. Jesus answers this man in the form of a story most know as the story of the good Samaritan.
This story is explained in a way children can easily comprehend. It’s not really simplified from what one would take directly from the Bible, which is appreciated. The illustrations are done exceptionally well in displaying the expressions and feelings on the faces of everyone involved throughout the tale. We see feelings of those being overly busy, holier than thou, and graciously considerate.
My seven year old daughter found the story easy to read and comprehend. The book is 32 pages long and can be read in 5-10 minutes depending on the reading level of a child. This book can be used to discuss loving others and becoming more like Jesus.
At the end of the book there’s a page that a page that features People in Bible Time with a short bit of information about what a Samaritan was, there’s a Bible verse and an area called Words to Treasure which talks about the story just read and reminds us of how we should pray to God for courage. I highly recommend this book! It’s a great way for a child to learn about learning to love like God commands us to.
