Gramma Nancy’s Animal Hats (and Booties, Too!) Book Review
Gramma Nancy’s Animal Hats (and Booties, Too!) is a fun 19 pattern book recommended for beginner to advanced knitters. There are patterns for hats, booties, and mittens sized to fit children up the age of 12. These items can be knit separate or together and given to friends and loved ones as a special gift ! If the aim is to create adorable knitted animals designs to be worn whether as a photography prop or for daily use this book is for you!
The animals design patterns fall into three categories; Forest Favorites, Jungle Jubilee, & Barnyard Buddies. There is Bear, Beaver, Fox, Owl, Rabbit, Toad, Monkey, Fish, Lion, Elephant, Panda, Turtle, Cat, Chicken, Bluebird, Duck, Lamb, and Pig! The hardest decision will probably be choosing which to knit up first. My 4 and 6 year old are still deciding which animal designed hat they want.
To begin, you’ll be instructed that every hat in this book starts with one of two basic designs: rolled brim and ear-flap. There’s also a basic fingerless mitten pattern. You’ll need to know how to knit these before delving in any of the other patterns in the book. I consider myself at an intermediate level knitter but felt that the instructions and patterns given for these were extremely easy to follow. I knit one of the basic hat patterns for each of my children in no time at all.
I appreciate that the hat fit measurements are included! Patterns are sized for birth to six months, three months to eighteen months, 12 months to seven years, and five to ten years. Every child has a different head size so it’s urged to check your gauge and measure for the most accurate fit.
These are hats that have a few different steps. You’ll mainly be knitting all the extra pieces separately than using specific techniques you may not be used to like placing Styrofoam and wielding a glue gun. Not every hat uses these mentioned techniques but be expected to come out of your knitting comfort zone and try a few new crafty things to reach the desired results.
As to be expected, all the techniques, supplies needed, methods, abbreviations, and so forth are included. The full color photos give you a great idea of what each project should look like when completed. Illustrations of techniques are easy to understand and the step by step instructions simple to follow.
I like this book and can’t wait to start knitting many more of the designs within. I’m thinking some adorable beaver hats would be well received by my Oregon native kids! The book is available in paperback as well as e-book format!
